Flashing Screen for Music on Roku

Server Version#: 1.21.1.3876
Player Version#: Roku

I was using Plex on my Roku to play some music (from CDs I’d ripped myself using Audiograbber) and when I played Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds, the screen went a little bonkers. I’m going to try to attach a short video I captured with my phone… nope. Video is not allowed here, so here’s a link to the video (it is only about 10-15 seconds) Crazy Plex Screen

I’m going to guess that this should not be happening. In fact, the very first time I started this album, the Roku Plex player crashed (the Roku main menu came up) after only a few seconds. The second time, it did this until the “screen saver” took over and the album cover started calmly sliding around the screen.

None of the other CDs I ripped have done this (yet) and even this one has worked in the past, but it has been at least several months since I’ve played it. Both the server and Roku player have changed since then.

Any ideas? It isn’t a big deal for me, since I rarely use the Roku/Plex to play music, but it is curious and if it gets worse and/or happens to others it may be a bigger issue.

FWIW, I upgraded from a Roku 3 to a Roku Ultra today and the strange flashing when playing this album no longer happens. No other changes, so it must be something in the Roku 3/Plex App that is upset by the tracks. Very strange.

But, since this is being ignored anyway, it is obvious no one is interested or cares. Oh well.

Hi. Thanks for the report. From what I can tell in the sample is that the Roku is having some memory issues, and settles after a little bit. We will file and investigate.

I am having the same issue. Just started this week. Playing ripped CDs, never had issue before. Screen background, album cover, and artist pic all “blinking” constantly. Happening on both Roku 3s in the house. Any way to fix this?

We are able to reproduce the issue on the Roku 3. It looks like it’s tied to the “blurred” background style. In the meantime you can switch to “dimmed” (Open Plex channel -> Settings -> experience -> Background Style). We’ll continue to investigate and find a proper solution while using the “blurred” background style.

EDIT: what I was able to reproduce may have not been the same issue. Can anyone confirm you are still seeing this issue while using the “dimmed” background style?

I think we may have tracked it down. We’ll have a preview update to test this week. I’ll post when it’s available.

My background settings are already set to “dimmed” and issue still remains.

We have released a Preview update. Please give that version a spin and let us know if it fixes the issue.

It didn’t ever “settle”. Every time I tried to play anything from that album it flashed continuously until the screen saver kicked in. When I “woke it up” the flashing resumed.

FWIW, I got a deal on a Roku Ultra a couple days after I posted this and the flashing has never happened on the Ultra. This was before the update was released, but I no longer trust preview editions, so I wouldn’t know until it is actually released anyway.

The preview version is installed separately, so you can run both versions, if you wanted to verify the fix. The fix will be coming to the next update.

I have the same problem on Roku 2

This should fix any model that had a memory constraint. Please give the preview version a try and let us know.

It’s a totally different user experience but at least it’s not flashing like a rave party

@ljunkie I gave the preview a try on my new Roku Ultra and the user experience when playing music is different, and it doesn’t flash like it had done. Is there anything specific you would like us to try and/or look for in the preview?

Unfortunately, the terrible “recently added” mess is unchanged in the preview, but that is a different thread.
