Yes, please give us a way to get AC-4 support. I have the new HDHomeRun 4K as well, and now I have no sound on most of my channels.
Same here. I’ve been researching, can someone confirm it’s due to FFMPEG support? I’ve put in a similar request there but would love conformation FFMPEG is the real issue and PLEX is on top of this.
Having same issue. Bought HomeRun 4k Quatro and no sound on HEVC channels over OTA. Channels that are HD are working fine with sound, just the HEVC channels with no sound.
Is it possible to just passthrough to receiver as a workaround? I know most receivers might not support it yet but it’s better than nothing right.
I guess I’m gonna throw this out here! I have an Unraid system with Plex as a docker. I have an HDHomeRun Quattro and a HDHomeRun 4K.
I watch Plex and other apps through a Roku Ultra 2020 on a Samsung 4K TV and use a Yamaha theater system. This week 5 channels in the Detroit market have gone to broadcasting ATSC 3.0.
As I understand it HDHomeRun 4K converts the audio to a AC-4 codec (to my knowledge not supported by Roku or Plex). As you may have guessed, no audio on the 4K channels. Has anyone found a workaround yet? I gave up and unplugged my hdhr 4K, so the QUATTRO can work and we get audio but no ATSC3.0 feed. Any help appreciated
FYI, we are able to get sound for these channels on windows 10 pc and Kindle Fire. It doesn’t work on Plex (on any device), Roku, or iPhone.
AC-4 is the audio format for ATSC 3.0. The HD HomeRun doesn’t convert the audio, it just records it from the broadcast.
See the two threads I linked above. According to Plex, FFMPEG has to add support for AC-4 before Plex can support it (Plex uses a customized version of FFMPEG).
Other Windows/Android/etc applications may not be as closely tied to FFMPEG as Plex, and may have their own AC-4 decoder, etc., so they’re able to play AC-4 audio.
Also glad ATSC 3.0 is being broadcast now in Detroit and unfortunately suffering the same issues. Thanks @celticknot1134 for mentioning this.
I’ve worked around the issue by disabling the HEVC channels (5 of them for me in Tampa) in Plex for the 4K tuner. This forces Plex to use my other tuners. This may not be an option for others unless you have another physical HDHomeRun box. I have two Quatros and the 4K so disabling the HEVC channels on just the 4K HDHomeRun is an option in my particular setup.
I just installed a Silicon Dust HDHomeRun Quatros 4K and discovered that all the ATSC 3.0 channels have no sound. Please Plex, please fix this.
How did you disable the channels in plex?
I can not seem to find a setting for that in Plex.
Plex unfortunately is unable to do anything about this sound issue. FFmpeg needs to update its software to work with the AC4 Audio that the new ATSC3 transmission is using.
To disable a channel in Plex uncheck the checkbox beside it in the DVR Device Settings.
FFMPEG ticket tracking for AC-4
It looks like some functionality is occurring on dev branches of ffmpeg. One commenter on the above link says they have ac-4 working with kodi. I hope plex will consider backporting this functionality to accelerate supporting it rather than waiting for full release cycles of future ffmpeg versions to trickle down to plex’s implementation of it.
In other threads on silcon dusts’s website here, it looks like they are adding firmware functionality to allow users to select the atsc 1.0 stream to be enabled instead of the atsc 3.0 stream.
The latest hdhomerun 4k firmware (20210104) now will allow detection of both atsc 1.0 and the same channel on atsc 3.0 and you can then disable the 3.0 in plex so that you have a functional atsc 1.0 channel. Previously, the firmware would detect them at the same channel id and only enable the higher resolution channel and you had no visibility of the atsc 1.0 channel.
There’s a patch available for ffmpeg now, so hopefully Plex can fit checking it out into their backlog soon.
(Also, maybe this thread and ATSC3.0 Broadcast and AC-4 Sound should be merged.)
Would love to see this functionality. Plex, can you roll it down to beta channels soon? Most of the main networks in the Vegas area are ATSC3, Which means no tv for me. Ironically even the decrepit HDHomeRun tv app decided audio on those channels.
Works on my Galaxy S 20 5g but that’s it lol. No point in watching high resolution on a small screen.
All stations have atsc 1.0 and as mentioned two posts prior, HDHR now separates the 3.0 simulcasts so you can continue to use Plex for all the 1.0 channels as you did before.
The max resolution you will receive an atsc3 is 1080p, but likely still 1080i and 720p which is way below your phones screen resolution and probably lower resolution that you stream from youtube, netflix etc (over wifi at least).
