Forced subtitle on non-hardcoded movie filea

I would like to set up to show Eng. Subtitle automatically only on non-hardcoded subtitled movie files. Possible? If so, how to set it up? I just want to avoid clients choose Subtitles themselves. Thanks

  • Open https://app.plex.tv/desktop#!/settings/account
  • Edit Audio & Subtitle Settings
  • Check Automatically select audio and subtitle tracks
  • Set Preferred Subtitle Language to English
  • Select Auto-Select Subtitle Mode according to your preferences…
    • Show with foreign audio will show forced English subtitles (e.g. when people speak Dothraki in GoT)
    • Always enabled will always show the selected subtitle language

Thanks but if I do as above, Subtitle will also show auto on hardcoded movies which Subtitle has encoded already inside movie file. Any idea?

If the subtitle is part of the movie itself (burned into the video stream), you cannot turn it on or off – hence Plex cannot decide to show or not to show that kind of subtitles.

It’ll work for all scenarios where the subtitle is either an external file (e.g. SRT files) or an own stream within the file (e.g. SRT, PGS, VOBSUB stream within your MP4/MKV/… container).

Thanks. One more question. I saw Subtitle (.vtt) format is pre selected on some movies without my acknowledgement or may be I wrongly set up. Any idea how to change it back? Because .vtt formatted subs are not compatible with most client devices and it will lead to transcode as well. Thanks

I’m not familiar with that format – Plex will show an audio track as selected either based on the settings above or if you had it selected before (manual selection will in that case overrule the general settings).

You can use Subtitle Edit to convert WebVTT(.vtt) to SRT format.
