Frame Forward/Reverse

I have been really wanting this feature for a while. The ability to go frame by frame forward and backwards. This is handy for a LOT of situations. I also have a friend who won’t choose Plex for their TV because they want to frame-by-frame sports. Please please please!

What are they using currently to get frame-by-frame playback?

(Not disagreeing with your request one bit. More examples can help make the case!)

They’re currently using a TiVo box. Couldn’t convince them otherwise :joy:

That makes me nostalgic. TiVo was amazing, back when it was amazing. They really do have a great implementation of couch & remote frame-by-frame support.

Nice suggestion.

It seems this is a bit of an awesome feature Plex should have but doesn’t, I think this may appeal to more users than perhaps first thought, seems to be an undying question…

I (amongst quite a few others I suspect) have home made videos of eg. sporting events where certain frame by frame analysis can be of benefit.

Also find quite often the occasion during a TV show or film where something catches your eye you want to look at in a bit more detail and rather than trying to time the pause exactly, would be more usable with just a bit more granular playback control…

Please can this be considered further

The ability to advance frame-by-frame is present in 40-year-old devices. Why is this essential, basic feature not present in modern software players? It’s insane! This should be at the top of the priority list of faults to correct in Plex. Second is removing the big, yellow play icon on paused video. Please hire some UX designers to help correct the basic usability issues in Plex.

I know it’s not straightforward to do a reverse frame by frame, but at least a forward frame by frame ability would be a massive improvement, and a reverse-to-last-keyframe perhaps if buffering say previous 60 full frames isn’t an option.

Think this will ever be considered by development - does anyone actually collate this stuff or are we just ‘talking in the pub’ ?

Most likely just pub talking, sadly.

This is something I would LOVE as I work in the animation industry and I’m always pausing movies/shows to draw, or study, or use as reference… and sometimes I just want that right frame. -_-

Any further news on this, please?

I know there have been other less useful (subjective of course) features added recently but this one is a real basic video playback ability that is missing.
