Generating video preview thumbnails continuous Loop

Issue: Server Activity stuck in never ending loop. Shows “Generating video preview thumbnails:
G:\FolderName\Game of Thrones” (Screenshot Bellow) This is causing the activity icon to remain active non stop and never progresses from Game of Thrones. None of the activity for this Game of Thrones preview thumbnail show up in Settings>Status>Alerts so I am not sure what is going on.

Just a thought but exactly how long has this been happening for?
I guess it’s not a huge show in terms of total number of episodes but each episode does take a while.

Hmmmm…I am not 100% sure but I think at least 2+ months now. @Xhaka UPDATE: But keep in mind, I didn’t notice it until the update that included the spinning activity icon. So I am not sure how long this would have been going on if we were to have had that the entire time.

Unless a better suggestion comes along you could possibly try temporarily moving all of GoT outside of anywhere Plex sees it and see if the rest of your stuff runs through.
Failing that you will probably need to provide logs.

I just had another thought on this.
If you mouse over the trailing part of the text it should it should tell you the specific file its creating the VP thumbnail for.
SO in your screenshot above mouse over the line with
G:\On the Air (2)\Game of Throne…

Perhaps there may be something funky in the specific file?

Same thing is happening to me on a specific GoT episode as well.

I say again, the only time I have seen this happen is with corrupt files and I have around 70TB of media.

This same thing has been happening to me for over 3 days now except with a movie and not a tv episode. I tried moving the movie out and back in and the generating process actually kept on running for the movie I took out and put back in. This movie has also been in my library for months now, so the preview thumbnails should already have been generated months ago. I would also like to add that I deleted the old copy of the movie and put a new version in and the thumbnail generation continues even after restarting plexmediaserver service.

Same as the others, the issue has probably been around much longer but not something that was super noticeable until that update called it out.

Edit: Also an MKV file, and when I pull it, the process just alerts for another episode in the same folder :slight_smile:

I have been having the same issue for about a week. Stuck on generating thumbnails for 1 specific hevc movie.

SAME HERE

Currently on Version 3.69.1, in the Binhex Arch/Plexpass container on UnRAID. Two versions ago had this issue, previous version cleared it, returned on this version.

Activity indicator spinning constantly saying that it is generating chapter thumbnails for GoTS03E03. On checking this episode has a full set of thumbnails, and it does not actually seem to be loading the system in any way.

Removing files/amending files/rebooting container/dockersystem has no effect. Only thing that has stopped this was the upgrade from 2 versions ago to 1 version ago.

There is no other indicator that I can see of this activity, including in the logs??

I went ahead and replaced all the got files with new ones and it works fine now. But now I seem to have a whole other list of issues. It seems that with every update they are breaking more and more features. Sad times. Mod it’s fine to close this topic unless anyone else needs help.

Not that I’ve seen.

if replacing the files or moving them out of the library path lets things progress, then it is obvious there is something that the plex scanner does not like.

unless or until plex does something, you can either,

disable thumbnail generation,

or re-rip/reacquire the content(s) in questions.

Same here. I tried to remove that particular movie from my library and rebooted Plex server. After reboot Plex started to generate thumbnail for another movie in infinite loop.
