Genre & Plexamp

Been using plexamp for approx 2 weeks now and one of the things that seems odd is the lack of genre information within the client.

Has genre become a dirty word :joy:

Example, using the mobile plex app if you goto any artist or any album you can see the genre displayed front and central. It’s missing from the same pages within the plexamp app. Styles and moods are there but no genre!

Is this intentional or just an oversight?

If you’re getting genre metadata from the cloud, styles are a richer superset, hence why we use them instead.

I don’t use genre metadata from the plex. I’ve them embedded in my files.

What you consider richer I would actual consider diluted. I’m adding my mid sized music library to plex and doing it slowly so I get matching tags etc… all as I want them but so far I have …

  • 296 artists
  • 1236 albums
  • 17217 tracks

of which I’ve 55 genre and plex has pulled 250 styles with 280 moods. A huge chunk of the styles especially has between 1-5 entries while others are huge with 500+. These are just silly to me personally and would much rather have genre presented. At least have the option of it rather than just being given styles in the UI.

Is there a way to embed tags for mood and style in my files so at least I can override and control this like I can with genre ?

You can add ā€œMoodā€ and ā€œStyleā€ tags with both MP3Tag and Picard. However, I don’t think Plex will actually use that metadata, but will fetch it from one of the online sources.

I seldom use the Style and Mood radios in PlexAmp. but they can give you some good auto-generated playlists, even when you don’t always agree with the associated styles and moods of the album, track or artist.

Thanks, I’ll look into adding those tags, appreciated that.

Getting back to OP. genre is lacking IMO in plexamp. However, I suspect I’ll just need to live with it. I’m most likely in the minority on the debate with the relevance of genre over the other stuff plexamp has decided to prioritise.

For what its worth, feedback is given which is all I can do so I’ll leave it there …

I do the same as you do. I embed genres. I use picard to tag moods. For some artists I go into the Plex Server and edit for the artist at the artist level and drop the moods and styles in there. That is the only way I have seen for it to work. But for me Plex pulls the moods and styles pretty well. But if I get annoyed with like 50 styles I delete those and add my own and hit the lock button.

Its a bit tedious but it is a way to curate your styles and moods.

Did you correctly set your library up to read genres from your tags?

Embedded genres and telling Plex to read them from your files should be what you need. Mood is not supported from tags.

Yes.

Back to my OP …

The issue/feedback I’m talking about is related to plexamp and genre and its UX design. Not any other client or the server, its all plexamp. As I stated above in my OP mobile plex app has genre information at the artist/album level, plexamp doesn’t.

Got it, sorry for misunderstanding! I read through a lot of posts a day
