Get Subtitles working from folder of external SRT files

I did all that many times and the subtitles never worked.

Again, this issue happens only in x265 videos (all of them in mkv container) with internal subtitles. Plex always plays the internal subtitles and never finds the external ones.

What fixed this issue to me was using MKVToolNix to remove the internal subtitles. Only then Plex recognized the external subtitles.

Can you provide an example - file name, directory structure, etc?

Do you see the external subtitles as a choice before starting playback?

Here’s two examples from my library. No problem using the external SRT subtitles with either.

H.265 video, internal ASS subtitles

Movies - HEVC
   Airplane! (1980)
      Airplane! (1980).mkv
      Airplane! (1980).eng.srt

H.265 HDR video, internal PGS subtitles

Movies - 4K
   Air Force One (1997) [2160p]
      Air Force One (1997) [2160p].mkv
      Air Force One (1997) [2160p].eng.forced.srt

Here’s how they look in Plex Media Player & Plex Web:
Airplane

AF1

Live & Learn.

I never had the issue you were having primarily because I have always removed any embedded subtitles when I encode my videos x265. I’ve done that automatically for years even before x265 (x264) because I always wanted external subtitles that I could control and maintain. I many times I mine mkv files for the subtitles themselves using ā€œSubtitle Editorā€.

PS: I forgot to mention that sometimes run into a video that has hard coded burned in subtitles. Nothing you can do then but go with the flow and use that subtitle. I seldom run across that, and I never intentionally burn one in myself.

I never download videos with hardcoded subtitles - except for those korean leaks…

I don’t know why, but since the last update (perhaps I took too much time to update Flex…?), external subtitles are working fine (even the tags), recognizing even multiple subtitles. I didn’t change anything on settings.

Anyway, thanks you all for your time! o/

Hi,
I don;t know if this is a change in the documentation or bug, But now when I have an external srt file it is not recognized when 2 character language but is when 3 characters ie eng,srt but not en.srt (at Version 1.14.1.5488/windows 10)

I have always used 3 characters (eng), but my PLEX will not find my external subtitles at all after the update (Version 1.14.1.5488). I have over 4,000 movies and TV shows that work fine, but after this latest update any new videos I add, Plex will not find the external subtitles.

I have learned the Plex protocols (painfully) I have had no problems in a long time – I am very careful when naming new files and subtitles using a script to ensure accuracy and consistency. I have learned that the slightest inconsistency is a problem – simple things like the capitalization of letter will cause problems.

Someone must have broken something in Plex.
