Hi - sorry for another post on this, but none of the others seemed to have an answer that worked.
I'm using PMS 0.9.7.28 on my iMac. I use Plex players on my Apple TV and iOS devices (iPad and iPhones)
None of my srt files are being detected at all. The movies are mkv - the srt files are named correctly I believe ("Movies\Kill Bill Vol 1 (2003)\Kill Bill Vol 1 (2003).mkv" and "...\Kill Bill Vol 1 (2003).eng.srt"). Have saved the srt with and without the .eng and hasn't made a difference... have checked my settings on pms, plex/web and ios players - have changed the transcoder settings (i.e have turned direct play etc. on and off), and under languages have had subtitles set to always enabled, manual and foreign audio - these seem to be suggestions made in other posts - nothing seems to work!
Would be great if someone could help or make some other suggestions? The subtitles all work on other players (i.e VLC etc.), just not Plex!
I'm experiencing the same problem. It appears to be random if PMS detects or does not detect de srt files stored in the same folder and with the same name as the video file (not the extension off course). It is not limited to mkv files but also persists with ts files.
I have been experimenting the last two hours. I managed to get the subtitles working using agents. From inside the section (ic TV Shows) I changed the settings for the Agent (advanced); for some reason the language was at English.
This than still is a file downloaded (?) from an agent and not the srt file I added manually to the folder, this problem is still there, the PMS is not picking up the srt files in my Library.
Hopefully to be continued because I love Plex on my Samsung (I have seen that there is a lot of developpers effort going on there)!
Sorry for dragging this up, but has this been solved? I sometimes see the srt's, others I don't. Strange thing is, that now I can see a movie with the srt subtitles. I stop and resume and no more subtitles. Same if I skip ahead in a video with working srt's.

the problem is there are multiple issues going on but folks tend to just say generic things like "srts are not recognized". when clearly they work for many people.
your particular issue seems like one i heard about where there is a time stamp in the srt without text the server stops transcoding the subs in after it passes that timestamp in playback

WIll check the srt's netx time this happens.
Also, I posted on another thread here, but migh as well ask: on my TV, I have a Minix Neo X5 connected and installed Plex from Play store. I have the subtitles set to huge and when I try to play a move and direct stream it, it plays the movie with SRT, but the subtitles are still pretty small. Ideas?

Well i guess it needs to transcode to change the size of the subtitles. You would need to ask in the Andriod forums why it cant change size when direct playing
I too was having problems with subtitles not appearing.
All my .srt files have been downloaded from Subscene or Opensubtitles and then muxed into mp4 files using Subler and set to "all samples are forced". Subler encoded the srt files to tx3g.
The subtitles play fine in iTunes, Quicktime, VLC and MacGo BluRay Player, however when i tried to stream the movie using Plex Media Server (0.9.7.28.33 for Mac), the subtitles did not appear. Also had the same problem when using Home Sharing to strream to iPad/iPhone
After abit of playing around, i have found that if i set the subtitles to "force some of the samples" or "do not force samples" in Subler, the subtitles play when streamed using Plex (and when using Home Sharing) to both iphone 5 and ipad 4. Unfortunately the subtitles now have to be selected when the movie is played using iTunes, Quicktime, VLC or MacGo which is rather annoying but i can live with it.
I've no idea what could be causing this, but i suspect it could be a bug in Subler. Have filed an issue with Subler so hopefully should hear something back from them
I've found an srt file which doesn't work with Plex, or at least not in RasPlex.
When we opened the avi file which belongs to this srt file, it didn't show the subs.
The video file (avi) and subtitle file (srt) have got the same name, so that can't be it. Maybe nice to know, VLC Player does show the subs when playing it on my desktop.

I've played the video file in PMS just now and the subs are appearing over there. My Mac isn't hooked up right now, so I can't check it out on that machine.
The subs are showing in the Windows client also, so it has probably something to do with RasPlex.
Probably a completely different issue then.

With the latest RasPlex version (0.3.3) the subs work also, so not the same issue as described above.
I am running PMS 0.9.12.4 on Ubuntu. I too have seen some SRT files not picked up by the server during scans. Often times they work, but many times they don’t. A refresh of the library or series doesn’t seem to help. Sometimes I can force a refresh of the individual episode and suddenly the server sees the srt file. For ones that refresh did not work on, I tried 12ikke12’s tip of renaming them to .txt and they start to show up. Very interesting. A side benefit is now I know which one is the local subtitles file and which one is downloaded by the server’s agents.
The subtitle must have the exact same filename as the video file (except the filename extension and the language code)
If you are on Linux, avoid using non-ascii characters in file and path names, since this may prevent the Local Media Assets agent from picking up local assets (subtitles, folder/cover art etc).
While some are ascii-text, some are UTF-8 and still don’t work. For instance:

While writing this, I thought perhaps I should try the two letter language code and copied the existing eng.srt to en.srt and guess what; the server sees it. So I try it for another that is not working and it didn’t help. However, the “file” command says that one is ascii, not utf8. So I try everything I can find to try to convert it to utf8, but “file” still says that it is ascii. I have tried iconv, recode, and enca, but file still says the srt file is ascii. Not sure what more to try on the encoding, but at least .txt works.
After researching this, I found that ASCII is a subset of UTF8, so technically ASCII is UTF8. I threw an international vowel into the .srt file and it becomes seen (by the file command) as UTF8. This has no effect on plex seeing it, however.
That plugin looks pretty cool. I have it installed and configured, but it didn’t seem to help the few episodes that I checked.
Sorry for bringing this up again. I have the same issue with subtitles downloaded via Sublight. They are all the correct name, and in UTF-8. PMS is not able to see them. Old subtitles downloaded via Sickrage works fine. I am running PMS on a Qnap nas, and the problem started last week when i changed the download method of the subtitles. I can’t really see any difference with the new subtitles and the old.
