Getting AV1 to work in the web player

I have posted a few times here and on reddit and I have seen replies saying it “Should be supported” and others saying to enable hardware acceleration but not following up with anything more. I have not had anyone definitively state that they have AV1 Direct Playing or Direct Streaming working on Plex Web.

Does anyone have it working? If so, what did you need to do to get it working?

AV1 support is covered with misinformation and I just want something solid.

Which browser and on what OS? For example, Firefox supports AV1 in MP4 and WebM containers, but it’s disabled by default on Windows.

In general, I (and most here, I suspect) would suggest using one of the Plex for desktop apps for the greatest compatibility with various codecs and containers. The web player will always be at a disadvantage in this regard.

I’m using Windows 11 and Chrome. Another client is using Windows 10 and Chrome. Both with hardware decode supported (30 and 40 series RTX GPUs). Both Chromes have hardware acceleration enabled.

Chrome itself supports it. I can play the file directly using Chrome itself and not plex with no problem. Also YouTube and other sites are using AV1 fine for me. But Plex forces transcoding (It seems to say Direct Play for the first 2-3 seconds in the dashboard but then says transcoding)

I personally use the Desktop app but I’m not going to force others to use it. I have already mentioned it to some and they don’t want to install another app over using the web player.
