Glitchy playback on Headless RPI

Hi. Headless RPI a few minor updates old. Problem not always. Just tiny ticks of skipped sound every so often. Sometimes several of these during one song, sometimes one a day. Any clue why?

I’ve checked the Flac files on other players and they’re fine. Running on Pi 3B+

Can be caused by lots of things; network congestion, high SD card I/O, something related to your DAC, etc.

A little more info about your environment would likely provide clues. Is the pi wired, or using wifi? What’s the SD card performance like? I’ve seen this issue with low-quality SD cards that stutter when Plexamp is caching ahead due to I/O constraints.

two useful settings (you might be using them already) … on the headless device, under Advanced > Caching …

set WiFi caching to “only next track” (the default makes sense for mobile, not for headless on a local network)

set cache size to “512MB” (helps minimize writing to SD card as described above by @aubrey.wodonga)

Thanks. I think I have set massive caching. It does sound like problems that come from a memory or CPU speed issue. I’ll adjust caching

I bought the highest quality sd card recommended by several tests blogs fwiw.

The dac is a justboom hat.

This headless hardware config has been active since headless first was a thing and before that using the pi Plex os version…and and only just noticing the glitches past few months…

Wifi only… I wish I had eth to the studio :disappointed:

even good SD cards are likely to cause stuttering etc. if regularly used for caching

(i remember how slow my PC used to run when it ran out of memory and had to use the HDD … and SD cards are slower)
