I am interested to know some good GPUs that would assist in transcoding. I currently have a Nvidia 1660TI. But I would like something better. How is the RTX 3090 for this purpose? I see the Quadro cards 5000 and 8000 but they are very expensive.
I host about 15-20 plex family and friends and want the best experience with the best GPU.
Any suggestions? I am running a Ryzen 9 5950X. I run my Plex Server in Windows 11.
what’s worth in my opinion is a 12900k from intel
no limit on how many transcode and i currently can simultaneously transcode 5 uhd blu-ray remuxes
with a discrete card is more expensive
same performances but u limited to 2 transcode
again this is just my opinion
Appreciate the response but there is a driver hack to open consumer grade NVidia cards to unlimited streams. My 1660TI I currently have it open.
Unfortunately I have the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X which is a great CPU but doesn’t offer Intel nsync I think its called.

how many 1080p transcode can your current gpu take ?

Video transcoding uses the decoder\encoder and vram, the 3d portion of the GPU isn’t important.
Each 4K transcode uses about 1.3 GB of vram, so choosing a card with more memory is what you are looking for.

So what you are saying is the RTX3090 with 24GB is a great upgrade from my current 1660TI?
Typically would be 1080p to 720p and the main reason is because many have the default 720p set unfortunately.
Seems like a waste of a 3d GPU card but since you already have it might as well put it to use.
the 3090 for only 720 or 1080 is absolute overkill y should save ur money and go with 3070 or 3080 if u really wanna over do but again it will be overkill ( imo)
How many simultaneous transcodes?
Are you hitting the limits of the 1660 Ti?
The 5950X is a beast (passmark = 46212). Transcoding a 10 Mbps 1080p video takes ~2000 passmarks. Ref: What kind of CPU do I need for my Server?
Unless all 15 are transcoding at the same time, you might be able to let the CPU handle the load.
Or, use standard Nvidia drivers, and let the CPU handle everything past the third concurrent transcode.

No I don’t have the 3090 was wondering about the benefits the 24GB could give me. IE Let’s say I had 20+ transcoding.
