What you just ask for is absolutely right and it’s also a shame that simplest things can not be applied to this fantastic tool that is PLEX.
Why not using a standard international Tag system that already exist ? or at least, give the opportunity to use that and not an other ?

There are 2 aspects which might seem independent, but which are in real life closely related to each other: data quality (the ‘what’) and data organisation (the ‘how’)
Basically, (data + quality + organisation) = information
On the data quality: given the size of my collection, I’m absolutely certain my tags are not 100% correct. But I’m not convinced that the quality of the info gathered by any algorithm is by essence better than the information I have gathered manually from the same sources (Discogs, Musicbrainz and the like)
The huge advantage of doing this manually is that you define your own standard way of doing things and that you can keep consistency across your library
On the organisation: I have seen a few really ugly music collections: non-standardised tags (eg: Hard-Rock, hard rock, HardRock…), artist names with different spellings (“sunny and cher”, “Sonny & Cher”, “Sonny Bono & Cher”…), no case standardisation, incorrect album names, lack of track#…
All this rubbish leads inevitably to duplicates, mistakes, incompleteness and ultimately to very poor data quality (back to previous aspect)
Considering I can’t do much more than today to improve the sheer quality, I really want to keep the focus on how things are ORGANISED
Plex is a very nice tool, but my focus is on my needs, not on the tool
So if Plex no longer suits my needs, I will simply evaluate alternatives that MIGHT better suit my needs, and eventually end up dumping Plex
Having said this, it is still scanning my lib since Saturday. So I need to wait and see!
I started my journey to Emby some years ago. First it installed it “just in case Plex does something stupid again”. Well guess what … they never stopped doing really, really stupid and crazy stuff.
But since then on I had Emby. When the internet connection was down Emby was there. When Plex hat painfull bugs Emby was there and also when Plex drove me nuts with it’s unpredictable, stupid behaviour … Emby was there.
Nowadays most of the time I’m using Emby. In fact I’ve become so used to the interface that I find Plex complicated and bloated.

I was considering Jellyfin & Emby (Jelly was quickly dropped because it does not run on CentOS8)
Emby gave me the exact feeling you describe: robustness, pure functionality and efficiency
I can’t say much about stability so far
I also particularly appreciate its straightforward interface wihch looks pretty much like Subsonic I was using ages ago (http://www.subsonic.org)
One vote for Plex though: I must admit that some of its bells and whistles are nice
PMS is still crunching my library and as I don’t want to launch 2 full lib scans at the same time, I will wait until it has finished to launch a lib scan from Emby for a real life evaluation!

So, after days and weeks of scanning, testing, swearing, re-re-re-doing things… I finally came to the very same conclusion as Marcel Hehle’s
2 notes:
- the only functionality I require is very basic: searching the library and music streaming
- I did not evaluate Emby for Android
In a nutshell:
PMS pros:
Very beautiful application packed with lots of features
PMS cons:
Complex interface
Requires a non intuitive directory tree structure
Requires connectivity to home (plex.tv) --> I really wonder what kind of information is going through and for which usage…
Emby pros:
Intuitive configuration
Very easy to use
Perfectly does the job (nothing more than music streaming)
Emby cons:
Far less sexy than PMS
Less bells & whistles
