So if this thing is really going to happen, what alternatives do we have?
You have Emby. There is really nothing else that even approaches Plex in features or abilities although on single devices there is Kodi.
BTW: I do NOT like Emby at this point. I find it very clumsy to use and its clients range from barely adequate to little more than a joke.
The emby apps are a laughable joke!
Well, the plex privacy is a laughable joke
Emby FTW. Already switching over my libraries. It isn’t as polished but it works just as well.
Doesn’t Emby track the same metrics?
Kodi
Emby
Universal Media Server
Infuse
OSMC
Streama
Tnx, ill start trying some out see whats best for me, sad that I have to do this
Emby looks promising …

Neither Kodi nor OSMC are media servers but mere players. But depending on the setup they might be enough for the respective user.

Plex’s Fire TV app says hello
Using emby as a server and kodi with the right plugins as the client can be a nice setup. It is not as polished as plex, but it might be what you are looking for.
I keep trying Emby (I am not switching but always like to keep up on things) and I am still not that impressed. Now I do not have a “Premier” account so maybe that is why, but it really is not ready to compete.

I have a feeling they will feel a sudden influx of cash for development.

Yes, they may very well. But will it help?
Who knows. Maybe not all of the Plex staff are happy with recent developments and are open to change …
prepare for the worst hope for the best

Can’t say I’ve had a single issue with the first app
I have continued my evaluation of Emby and I have change my mind a bit.
It took a very long time (almost two days) to go through my library and get the metadata for all my files (3000 movies and 500 TV shows) and while it was doing that it was nearly unusable and pretty mush prevented the use of the apps for any proper evaluation.
Once it finished the initial scan I began some serious evaluation and have come to the conclusion that for me and the way I want to view my media Emby is a viable alternative. The apps on the Roku, Fire TV and Shield TV are all functional and without major issue for the way I want to view my media. In fact the Shield TV app is much better than any of the various ways Plex can be viewed. The “play” button on the remote (a Fire Stick remote paired with the Shield) even directly starts playback.
I am still evaluating but for now for those wanting a Plex alternative it looks like Emby is at least decent and quite functional.
To rate it on a scale of 1-10 for functionality (1 is the least functional and 10 the most) I would have to say that Plex is an 8 and Emby is a 7.5.
Good to know. I’ll install it during the next days and will give it a try …
