Google Cardboard VR Integration

It would be awesome to see support for PLEX in Google Cardboard VR.

Google Cardboard VR seems to be going viral as a low cost VR solution.

There are already cinema app that support this device using mp4 playback or youtube.

BUT Integration with PLEX would be Epic!

This would really be awesome.

I just ordered Google Cardboard (unofficial from china because cheap) and I expect it'll be here in roughly a month.I've gotta start making some VR apps for android first, and I won't have my cardboard until mid March. But as I go, I will likely be posting more as I progress. I think this will be a very fun project. I did a 2D demo (without audio) of a pre-roll sequence a while back(http://goo.gl/2XiUGN), it was my rough recreation of the Pensacola NAS IMAX theater, its a 4:3 theater screen, but still an awesome place to watch a movie.

My long term goal with this project is to have a variety of theaters to watch in (real ones re-created for VR if I can get dimensions and pictures of chairs/screen/etc). I'd like to be able to select a movie from a Plex library, and once in the movie theater have the pre-movie trailers, and the pre-roll clip play before the movie starts. Another big part of the wish list is to have the 3D naming convention for Plex recognized by the app (h-ou, h-sbs).

Short term goal is to build a single VR app that allows the user to experience a 3D world that I've modeled, so I'll post again once I've accomplished that.

Just tested Cardboard with Plex playing a 3D SBS movie. It works of course, but Plex is lacking integration with the Cardboard for the main UI, magnetic "button" and "head-tilting" navigation.

Now that Cardboard development has a much easier development toolkit (and supports iOS and Android), can we revisit native Cardboard support in Plex?

In the spirit of transparency, can we get some feedback from devs? Estimation of workload and current priority? How likely is that to happen before the end of 2015? End of 2016?
Thanks!

I’m not a plex dev, but I would bet they have their hands pretty full with the current clients they are working on. Might be better to reach on to some of the third party devs to get something going.

Cardboard isn’t not a new client. It would be an additional function to the
Android and iOS clients, namely splitting the screen and making it
stereoscopic.

All that needs to be done by the developers is to create a simple sterescopic mode that duplicates the video on two halves of the screen. VERY SIMPLE when you have all the other foundation of the app.

I don’t think we’re looking for any special 3D effects to go with it, I’m not at least.

Here is an app that is very similar to what @Pyrometheous mentioned up above.

The Mobile VR Station is the best experience I’ve come across because it supports DLNA\UPnP to be able to watch movies\shows from my Plex server. The biggest problem with this style is battery life. The app is constantly building a 3D environment based on the head tracking and it sucks battery because it is similar to playing a high intensity 3D game, which essentially is what this would be but it would be playing a movie instead of shooting bad guys. It even uses SceneKit to build out the 3D environment.

The closest experience to what @Pyrometheous is looking for can be found in Zeiss VR ONE Cinema app

This is an actual theater setting but doesn’t support network videos.

All I want is something that will not suck my battery but still allow me to watch a 3D movie on my iphone. I can watch HSBS shows now just with the builtin Plex functionality but because of the way HSBS compresses the frames horizontally the video looks stretched vertically. All I would like is for Plex to correct the video to the correct ratio so it is in its natural 16:9 ratio, or whatever it is supposed to be. This is the best for battery life because Plex playing videos is very efficient relative to a full 3D environment.
Here is a screenshot of the HSBS video through Plex

Cmon PLEX!!! You guys rock at EVERYTHING you have put out. As a PLEX Pass supporter…it should be a VERY simple task to create a simple Side By Side view option while watching a movie. PLEASE. Make this happen PLEX!!! It should take about a day to code if that, and you would make thousands of your PLEX supporters happy. Heck…I would pay $20 myself to get the player from PLEX that allows SBS playback of my movie collection. PLEASE…hear our request and answer back.

Also…why is it taking like 12 months for PLEX developers to either a) implement this or b) answer back on this forum? A bit disconcerting to say the least. :frowning:

Hi!
I am also desperately looking for a way to play my SBS 3D videos I have on plex over my cardboard… As mentioned above this must be pretty easy to program and would be an awsome feature I think…
so pushing this up and asking again for at least an answer from the developers if this would be possible or not!? Thank you!!

I got it working with Plex Media Server + DLNA activated, BubbleUPnP (or MediaHouse) App, AAA VR Cinema App see also this thread
But a native support would be much more appreciated of course

I give my vote for this as well. VR support would be a great Plex Pass feature.

Wondering if the quality really is so great. Can you also try this with iPhones?

I too would love to get this scenario, but simply would never get it working. Bought a pair of goggles today and man, I heard watching the new madmax with them is fantastic. Goal now is a way to view all my server movies after some conversion, and easily enough that my wife could too.

As an actual Plex Pass supporter: if it were simple to select, covert then stream (and have it look as it should) - I would happliy give several hundred more… Right now…
I know it’d take time, but man - with the availability of reasonable glasses and hi res smart phones, the market is HUNGRY

This would be awesome!!!
