On windows 10 pro with 32GB ram , amd 5950x cpu
Remote is Google TV android latest version
my movie is in a folder named “Movie (year)”
There are 3 versions of the same movie, the original 1080p hevc at 6Mbs, and 2 transcoded to lower 960p at 2Mbs and 540p at 0.8 Mbs. All are hevc (.x265) and AAC
My remote player is set to limit at 8Mbs. The server network upload limit is 10 Mbs so the Server is set to 8 Mbs remote. Transcode quality is Automatic (medium x264). Hardware transcoding is enabled and transcoder selection is set to Automatic.
No matter which version I select to play from the google TV Plex app, it always selects the original 1080p and then does the silly thing of transcoding to an inferior quality, even though all 3 versions are eligible for direct play.
If I set the player remote limit to 4 Mbs, then it will properly select the 960p (labeled as 720p on the app)
On my Windows laptop using the Plex app, it will play the requested selected version. But if i select the highest 1080p 6Mbs source it still transcodes to an inferior quality rather the using an existing transcoded file with a lower bit rate.
I see no reason to use an “Optimized” version since the optimization process often results in an x264 encode with a higher bit rate than the source. It would be nice if Plex finally added x265 transcode support.
