Group Multiple Plex Servers

That’s precisely what’s happening now with UNO.

Jut gonna say that I’m a bit confused now what this suggestion is asking. the original post was asking for

Which i took to mean that. I go into tv shows an all items from all servers are shown. which means. if two servers have the same show like, Game of Thrones, then they are combined somehow into a single listing. This is sorta interesting but would need to work out how to decide which file to play if multiple server have the same episode.

But as a read though again I am thinking it asks for what was already tried and most folks did not like. What we internally called “Type First”. In the version before UNO which most folks hated, is going to TV Shows (the type) first then seeing a list of the tv libraries from all the different servers in that view. The last one used being presented first. I can’t stress how much folks did not like this (I am aware some did, but not most did not). Android mobile still has this. If that is the case then I feel closing this to give your votes back is best since it won’t happen.

Yeh this was my request
The first part of your train of thought is what I was suggesting.
I guess deciding if multiple servers have the same file and deciding which to play first:
Server on LAN first preference
Nearest Server second preference

+1 For that Feature! We would have much more overview over our content if we could group all movies from all servers to one Library view on the Dashboard.
Some people even don’t understand that there could be multible servers where the content is coming frrom.

+1! I am even surprised how this is not implemented yet!

Or just do what search does, and give you a popup list of all servers it matched on (if > 1) and let you pick yourself.
I don’t care what server something’s on until the time to play it arrives, and even that I care less and less about as Plex’s automatic quality shifting improves.

That’s essentially what is being asked for here, it just needs to be implemented better than it was before. So in that sense, it sounds like you are telling us this will not happen.

Please close the thread so we can have an official statement on the matter and move on. This has been open for 5 years.

+1 This feature is key for most users. At least unified search engine would be great

What do you mean?
grafik

@OttoKerner, yeah in the web UI it’s working but all server search is not selected by default you need to do show more results and then select all servers. BTW it will be automatically selected for next research…
On the PLEX client of smart TV’s this is not available (Might be due to the client not up to date …)

plus 1

Throw in tv guide integration as well so you know it is in your libraries.

I don’t mind switching Plex servers for more transcoding power - at all.
What I would like is the ability to replicate Plex libraries (all the same structure) across multiple platforms, automatically, including metadata (so the libraries look, search the same). Currently, I have to copy/replace content from a centralized/up-to-date location to all of my library copies, then run update libraries but making sure the configuration is identical. Too many steps and too much configuration - this could easily be automated and with a separate utility from Plex. I use Plex from home and in my RV. Sometimes the internet isn’t fast enough on the road to run Plex on a networked library that’s at home. So, before every trip, I go through the laborious steps of updating my mobile library, that by the way, is on the network (Nvidia Shield with USB storage) when at home.
Storage is cheap.

Interesting and one us actually looking at this as looking at building multiple types of systems, to deal with Satellite live feed, Dvb live feed, Audio/radio and a Nas system for films.

While this will see several Plex server’s, in the same household, being able to organise content and showcase as one homogeneous list would be helpful.

  • List item

So from all the reading, what one us asking with this topic, is a way to with Plex Pass set up Server hierarchies, so Plex understands that Plex server 2 obviously has a higher in place in file structure than 3 do will not show duplicate files from 3. While still allowing host systems to Transcode, as a film database is more a beast than a life broadcast one.

  • List item

Secondly being able to reorganize contents, so different accounts on the same household can prioritize what they see as important.

In one’s case audio books are higher priority than say live TV, but another will be opposite.

That way the core viewer will just see content structured.

I have multiple servers, but I have separated TV Shows on 1 server and Movies on a second server. Looking for a may to make what ever is On Deck or Continue Watching to show up for both servers at the same time which doesn’t seem to be available. Only shows for preferred server unless I’ve missed something. Just looking for a simple fix please.

It is perfectly possible to add libraries from different servers to your home page and side bar.

Yes, this has let me add the second server to the home screen but it still won’t allow the second server to show On Deck or Continue watching unless I make it the primary server.

Go to the second server, to the Recommended tab of a library and add the On Deck or Continue hubs to your home screen.

Okay, great that worked. Thanks

Wow. At least now I know it wasn’t all in my head. I had thought I remembered seeing servers combined at one point. And then you could choose which server to play the media off of. Maybe I didn’t use whatever interface/client much at the time as I barely remember it. As much as this may never come back, it would be really great as an option. Even with 2 or 3 server, my family still isn’t sure where to find stuff. I would love for each of them to use their own servers and everything is combined, but allow them to set their own server as top priority if something exists in two locations. That way they could use their local server first and no bandwidth, if the same media exists in two locations.

Add another scenario, where you could prioritize based on quality. If the same file exists in multiple locations pick highest quality. So if bandwidth isn’t a worry and a shared server has better quality media it will play those first, if available.

Would also allow a lot more seamless backup servers.

It would help fix this mess:
plex combine multiple servers

Personally I get the feel this feature may have been too soon for its time and with all the other UI changes that have happened and the time that has passed people maybe be warmer to the situation now. It would definitely be a nice option to have.

I’ve actually now been able to go back and look at when this was implemented (“Type First”) and now recall I think some of the reasons it got a lot of blow back. I can recall having a hard time actually getting to specific servers if I wanted to. Reading some comments sparked that memory. It also seems that by default plex through all the share someone had together and I think some people liked some level of separation. I don’t necessarily want to see a bunch of stuff that’s shared with me constantly if I’m usually not interested. Also is seems a lot of the hate was closely tied to the overall major UI overhaul for one and secondly a bunch other other issues for roku owners.

To me it seems “simple” if the user where given the option to pin an “Combined servers Movies” library (bonus points for being able to choose which servers it will combine). That would remove zero of the flexibility that already exists. With the way UNO is now and being able to go to the “more” screen and see everything grouped by server. It’s already fixed what I think was one of the major issue the first time around. With all the customizability that has come about this seems like it would fit back in now and be welcomed this time around.

And now that some time has past, I think the reason for having “Type First” makes sense again. I think more users are have more sources for content and this has become an “issue” once again.

Just looking this up to see if it was possible.

I have 2 personal servers at home and sometimes trying to find a particular show can be frustrating. It would be so much easier if I could search thru or look thru a single file for all TV Shows from both of my servers within Plex.

2 thumbs up on my end for this feature.
