Had an email from Plex today, saying "Your media is getting dusty. No worries, you can still ..."

Your media is getting dusty. No worries, you can still play on a ton of devices!

"Where’d you go?
Hi Trotter999, you’ve done an great job getting your Plex Media Server up and running and adding your media. Nice job.

We noticed you haven’t been playing a lot of media lately. No worries, we just wanted to remind you how easy it is to enjoy your content on a ton of devices, anywhere."

Can someone from Plex please define how much media I should be playing, clearly not reaching the limit, but what would be an acceptable “playing of media” in numbers?

We posted at almost the same time:

Not sure if I should read your OP final question as sarcastic or serious, but I found the email quite disconcerting.

So did I, I suppose we should be aware that Plex are tracking what you do with your own server, but this is not a good idea, and I would like them to stop monitoring my usage of my server, and confirm that they will not monitor it.

Personally I would like to know EXACTLY what monitoring is going on, who has access to it, and how (or if) we can disable this.

I don’t remember anything about this in the legalese way back when.

I got the same email the weird thing is on average I use Plex 2 hrs or more a day

Just got the same email:

  1. I use my Plex apps daily, so I don’t know why they’re asking “where’d you go?”
  2. I had NO idea that Plex was monitoring how much I play from my server. Are they simply looking for connections to the server? Do they know what titles I’m playing? What media is in my collection? This is way too big-brother for my tastes.

I received this today as well.

(1) It is not true.
(2) I never consented to monitoring my viewing habits on my home servers, either locally or remotely.

If the email is accurate that they are monitoring our usage, they need to cut it out. If it’s not accurate, they need to apologize and re-write their advertising copy.

Feel free to post comments about this issue, but it would be better if they were in a single thread, so please post any additional comments in this thread instead of this one

Yeah Trotter999 by concer over you watching me watch Plex trumps (ugh) your need to have your forums look nice.
What the hell guys!
