I’m probably going to be in the 4-5 streams range. That’s top end, for awhile. I would like a bit of future proof growth space, of course.
I’m looking at getting CPU + Motherboard + RAM combo to upgrade away from my old setup and was looking at either a Ryzen 5 3400G, Ryzen 3 3200G or the i3 9100 + Budget Motherboard + 16GB Ram.
Some of my movies are h.265 as it keeps the file sizes small and I have a bunch of 4K stuff as well. I know I shouldn’t look to transcode the 4K out but… Could any of these builds handle a stream or 2? (I’ve read the colors will be washed out, I know)
I kind of like that the AMD build would have PCIe 4.0, getting me a little future proofing there ( already looking into PCIe cards for SATA expansion as most budget motherboards only have 4-6 SATA connectors.)
do not use AMD for hw transcoding even in win10, I builded one 3400g two days before. the cpu still hurt, and the 3400g Vega 11 apu only 40-50% used. I believe it needs Plex team make apu work in Plex soft
Glad I cam across this thread, just built a small itx build to be used as a dedicated plex server. Built it with an AMD 3200G to keep costs down and thinking that I could add a graphics card later. It is primarily for in house streaming of content so no transcode. Did try connecting from outside and one 1080p to 720p transcode pretty much pegged the cpu. Stated sweating it when all the documentation I was coming upon was saying that HW transcoding wasn’t supported on AMD processors …that is required an INTEL chip with the “quick start” capability. So just looking for confirmation that you can have a AMD cpu and add a dedicated graphics card ( thinking GTX1050i) and it will HW transcode on the dedicated card?
