They are unable to get AMD GPU transcoding to work in Linux, it’s very unlikely they will ever make it work on a Raspberry Pi…
What the hell! I came back a year after asking for hw transcoding on the Pi 4 and still nothing but more people asking for the feature. The “We have other GPUs and other features higher on the priority list.” excuse doesn’t hold water anymore. Please! Give us the ability to use a cheap Pi for our NAS/DVR projects! I’m tired of coming back here every so often to be reminded that the Plex team doesn’t give a crap.
RPi 4 - lifetime plexpass here,
hardware transcode would be awesome. Right now, I externally process all of my videos to reduce the strain on the RPi when streaming to multiple Roku devices in my house. CPU transcoding kills the system when streaming to more than one device. Externally processing the videos to allow them to stream without transcoding works great - I’ve had 5 videos playing at the same time on different devices and the system didn’t even flinch.
It can be done, but it takes work up front to make it usable on the Pi4. One area where preprocessing videos doesn’t help is antenna/dvr capture. I have a dual tuner, but the pi can barely keep up with a single dvr recording…so, there’s that stumbling block. Hardware encoding would be great. It didn’t stop me from buying the lifetime pass, but it sure adds a lot of work maintaining my video collection.
Out of curiosity what format/codec ect are you using? I’ve been having some issues with some of my library and want to make sure I have a working setup before I attempt processing 500gb.
RPi 4, 4gb
And of course +1
Voted for this issue; lifetime plex pass user.
I would love this feature, considering a lifetime subscription.
Having a PI 4 as a home server with a NAS combined for my media, PI4 runs docker with many apps and Plex of course.
Is this thread over a year old? I’ll also +1 it. Had to replace my pi and didnt realize the new one wasnt supported by plex. Pretty disappointing.
+1. This would be amazing, please add.
+1. for this please
+1 pleaseee
+1 please!
+1 Please
+1 Please
Lifetime Plex.
+1 When using remote watching, it always crashes within a half hour when I use my RPi 4 server :-/ My MBPro doesn’t have a problem, only this isn’t my main server…
+1
Only thing that currently works is DLNA and use BubbleUPnP to stream to Chromecast Ultra without crashing. With using DLNA it only uses peaks of 20% of CPU but mostly 5%. When using Plex streaming, it uses 100% and video doesn’t even want to start.
Raspberry is unresponsive at 100% CPU. When I close Plex stream, it gets back to 2% CPU
+1 there are a lot of raspberry pi on this world

As a RPi dev I really recommand Plex HW transcoding support. Our clients really need it. VPN Kodi support is too weak. There is a market on Pi for Plex.
+1 for me as well, pi is the ideal platform to run a home media server but plex is not utilizing the hw properly.
+1 and also wanting to run Plex on the Start9 Embassy server that I am expecting to arrive soon
+1 vote to support RPI 4 HW decode/encode.
