I’m using a Dell R710 running ESXi 6.7 for my Plex server. The server itself is inside a Windows 10 x64 VM and the server has 48 GB of RAM (16 GB dedicated to the VM), 2x Intel X5670, and I recently added a NVIDIA Quadro P2000. Note that I’ve enabled GPU passthru for the VM, so it should have the low-level GPU access that is required for hardware transcoding.
I’ve enabled hardware transcoding and tested it briefly by optimizing a 4k video. I tried playing another 4k video on my local network and I’m getting a message saying that the server is not powerful enough.
So I have two questions:
- Do I need Intel Quick Sync in order to do any hardware transcoding, or is that only required if I’m using an Intel integrated CPU?
- Is Linux a better operating system to use as a Plex server, or will Windows suffice?
Thanks!
