Selecting and enabling NVIDIA hardware transcoding

I’m running Plex on an Intel Xeon E3-1220 server running Ubuntu 16.04, currently with no graphics card. I don’t believe the 1220 has Intel’s VideoSync or whatever it’s called to do transcoding, so I’d like to purchase a graphics card to put into the server.

What NVIDIA card do I need to do 4K transcoding, and in others’ experience does it tend to work out of the box with Plex, given installing NVIDIA’s proprietary drivers?

I just want to make sure I’m not buying a card that will end up not working.

Pretty sure only intel GPUs are supported under Linux as of right now.

You’re right, I just dug around some more and found this:

On Linux, hardware-accelerated decoding is not supported on NVIDIA GPUs. Intel Quick Sync is required for hardware-accelerated decoding.

Thank you!
