Having subs in 4k will not play and spike server cpu (only in roku)

Can you get me your server logs for this test case? Wondering if your server is having trouble burning in the subtitles.

I see the SRT playback in the logs too, and that it’s client-rendered.

Can you share an example of this happening? What displays on the Roku? It would be nice to start with the simplest possible scenario.

Agreed re: server logs.

Why would it struggle only for roku?

Anyway

Here you go
Plex Media Server Logs_2022-05-20_18-05-45.zip (5.8 MB)

Odd

I cant even direct play with subs it gets auto 1080. Once subs removed it plays 4k. Logs to follow

Here you go. Even with direct play it refuses to play with subs on

It’s not direct playing, it’s direct streaming the video and transcoding the audio. When you enable subtitles, that will cause the video to transcode and embed the subtitles.

Your server logs show it’s working correctly so I’m not clear why it won’t playback on the Roku. Need to dig some more into your logs.

I know its related to roku becAuse under the exact same conditions, it work on every other client

Let me know if you want me to run any specific test

Not sure if this will add any meaningful value. I found another friend with roku stick and asked him to run tests. Of the three 4k movies one loaded subs fine and two didnt and stuck at 33% forever. Then when i asked him to load the first movie again, it got stuck at 64% forever and wouldnt work again regardless of how many times we tried. No idea why that one movie worked fine at first with zero hit on server cpu/gpu but wouldnt work again

Something I noted with my Roku Ultra’s no matter the video file. as soon as subs were enabled PGS or SRT it would start transcoding the video. Even the H264 1080 mkv content. This is why I went away from the Roku’s. I ended up getting Chromecasts with Google TV instead.

Yea i believe this has always happened with Roku. But i am fine with it as long as the 4k sub bug is fixed

Out of curiosity, what os does your server run on? Mine is windows and won’t transcode 4K with HDR. Which is what all the of my 4K titles are, and from what I understand is how all 4K titles are period. I have a Quadro P4000 which can in theory handle multiple streams, but I’m limited by the support of HDR transcoding with Plex on my OS.

Hi there,

I just wanted to let you know I have the same problems. I stream from my pc to my smart tv (samsung with plex-app) and when I turn on subtiltles the screen stays black and after a while I get an error message.

Turn off the subtitles, and boom! Plays like a charm. Just without subs offcourse.

Let me know if and how I can help.

keeping an eye out on this topic!

grtz

This is kinda serious bug

I’ve reviewed your logs again and still can’t figure out why the Roku won’t play.

Can you reproduce and get me new logs for both the Roku and server?

Then, can you play the same file from the Shield and get me the android logs and from server. I’d like to compare them.
