HDHomerun Quatro transcode issue

I have a HDHomerun Quatro and while watching the news via a Roku. While watching tv the trascoding takes about 50% of my cpu. Is there a way of of just passing thru the live tv feed without transcoding?

The Roku only supports a few video codecs from what I understand: h264, h265, and VP9, at least according to their SDK documentation: https://sdkdocs.roku.com/display/sdkdoc/Audio+and+Video+Support. The stream coming from your HDHR Quatro I am guessing is mpeg2 if received using an OTA. The mpeg2 video stream must then be transcoded to h264 by Plex since mpeg2 is not a supported video codec on the Roku.

Thank you for the insight

An Amazon TV box supports mpeg2 codec so Live TV would not need to transcode (assuming Plex is on your local network).

Caution my understanding is after version 2 they dropped this, so if you get a new device it doesnt support Mpeg2. The only one I know of that does it natively now is the Shield tv

Maybe I misspoke. When I look at this wiki article, it doesn’t list MPEG-2 as a supported codec? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Fire_TV#Models

The Apple TV 4 and up can support MPEG2 via software decoder. Not sure if Plex client has the codec but Channels DVR passes MPEG2 to the Apple TV.

The native player app does not support MPEG2, Channels player includes the codec for their app. Which is why several apps create their own player, Kodi, Channels, etc bc the devices player itself doesnt include it and it is needed to not convert. Plex ha always been built on using the Native player of the device and transcoding with the server to play on the device as needed. So if you want to use plex player at the moment the only device I know of that will play the Mpeg2 natively is the Shield.
