HDR passthru with plex player for Linux

Server Version#: Latest for FreeBSD FreeNAS
Player Version#:
I’ve got a Linux Mint 20.3 PC, NVidia GTX 1060 GPU, Nvidia driver 510, and Plex HTPC Linux client. When I play HDR content the AV receiver does NOT display HDR content being passed to it. When the PC was a HTPC running Win 7 it passed data thru. How can I get the linux setup to work as the old HTPC based on Win 7? Or do I have to wait for the Plex HTPC Linux app?

Thanks.

First it’s worth noting that HDR on Linux is not entirely supported yet. Yes there are pieces that support it but you need the whole chain from app, opengl, compositor, window server, gpu, and display to support it. Last I checked this is not yet the case. This is a case where Windows is far ahead of Linux.

It is possible that when HDR is fully supported in Linux that it may work in the really-soon-to-be-released Linux HTPC but I expect that it’ll require some modification in the app to make it work.

You might try LibreElec/Kodi for your player. I have it running on an RPi4 and it passes HDR perfectly.

I think I’ll try Roku Ultra as a Plex client as it should handle HDR & 4K with no problems. I believe it has no problems passing everything thru.
