Headless Plexamp - tricky but possible to get multichannel working on HDMI out of a Pi3

Bought a license just for this.

Trying to setup headless player on a pi.

Can’t even get the damn pi to connect to wifi despite following instructions to the T to set it up to do it.

Been going around in circles for 2 hours now, even AI can’t help me sort it out.

Absolute waste of money if I can’t even get wifi to get the damn headless player on the damn device.

Is there any resource for stable current instructions to set this thing up?

What instructions were you following to setup the Pi‘s WIFI?

https://www.raspberrypi.com/documentation/computers/getting-started.html#wi-fi

That link seems to be showing windows from a gui. I’ve been following processes to setup headless plexamp, which has me installing a lite raspberry pi os, which is command line only. I followed instructions to a T to put in config files with my wifi information, and spent hours mucking about with command line commands, the wifi adapter is there, it can see my wifi network, but it will not join, and all AI can do is walk me around in circles with useless BS. It seems no one can make a simple guide to setup a headless plexamp pi.

same page has a section on how to configure wireless network from a command line.

https://www.raspberrypi.com/documentation/computers/configuration.html#wireless-networking-command-line

I’m unimpressed.

Thing was a nightmare to setup, no easy guides at all.

And the thing won’t even load right, or actually play any audio even when I get it to look like it’s playing.

And it has a bunch of bullshit audio processing garbage which I don’t want - I want pure passthrough.

All I simply need is a way to passthrough audio as is out the hdmi of my pi, multichannel flac, gapless.

I hope you have a way to do that, or I"m going to have to insist on a refund, because I won’t pay a dime for garbage that can’t do one simple thing.

Cannot make any sound come out at all!!!

I specifically set the audio out to HDMI, and now anytime I try to play any file, it just backs out and doesn’t play.

What use is a player that plays nothing - and it looks like you have no options for pure passthrough.

This is garbage - I hope someone has a good explanation for all of this, or I will demand a refund!!

None of the guides I found for setting up the headless pi app work.

You charge money for the ability to use this app, yet there seems to be no way to make it work, it seems to be a pile of garbage best I can figure, and there seems to be no support or anything.

I feel ripped off!

you could just flash the official headless plexamp image with the official raspberry pi imager and set the wifi config prior to flashing. I mostly setup my raspberry pis through SSH, so don’t forget to enable that before you flash your image.

Maybe you want to use RoPieee | Getting Started instead.
Among its optional features is a headless Plexamp.

ropieee is great, but unfortunately it doesn’t support hdmi audio out

@armyofquad1 i wrote a basic installer + detailed setup notes here

it includes a few notes on using hdmi audio … it might help depending on which pi model you have

Nothing works, I can’t get a sound out of anything…

I ASSURE YOU THAT NOTHING WORKS!!! (There - is that a ■■■■■■■ complete sentence?)

Grammatically… yes, that’s a complete sentence.
As for questions asked and pointers given, you seem to have evaded answering any of those.

Are those last posts in response to a particular guidance in this thread or a specific guide?

No one has provided any method of getting a damn Pi to work with plexamp. Now it won’t even show me a library - and it’s really bummed about that. That’s just great!

This is such a heap of garbage.

Do you guys really think this is funny?

Like “oh no…we can’t code worth a damn…let’s throw in a joke and maybe that will make the end users forget the pain and suffering we’re causing them”

Please…

It seems to me, you got many options in the posts above but you’re not letting us know if you even checked them out (or what guide you were using that’s not working for you).

At this point, this feels more like a random rant (no offense).

I suggest, maybe you take a deep breath and share some details of what exact steps you took (maybe with a reference to the guide you’ve been using) and where you got stuck?

I followed an online guide - posts here offered nothing useful at all…and I don’t even know where to begin with this mess.

I just want something that works! Why is that so difficult?

I’ve set this up multiple times now, all with nothing good resulting.

This guide seems to get something to load…

But then I have no sound out my HDMI!

I dicked around with sound settings on the pi itself by ssh-ing in and asking AI for assistance, and it found the HDMI was in some sort of funky mode that wasn’t playing PCM, but I don’t even know if that has anything to do with anything, and it walked around in circles telling me to set the same damn things, until finally one of the AIs mentioned adding a f to a string in a config file that changes the driver to something legacy, and then it shows the right mode, but only 16bit not 32 (for my 24 bit audio), but I don’t even know how or if plexamp cares about any of that, because NOTHING TELLS ME ANYTHING ABOUT SETTING ANYTHNING UP TO OR FROM ANYTHING!!!

So at some point before dicking around with hdmi or stuff, one of my setups showed that it was playing, but no sound - maybe it was sending it out the analog jack. Which - I cannot help but be amused at how kodi just about tries to block you from using the analog out and gets all bitchy if you point this out, while plex here seems to be hard coded to it. I set it to hdmi, and then it wouldn’t play anything, which led me down the dicking around with config sound settings with AI path that went nowhere.

And I wiped and tried from the start, because there has got to be a default path that makes sense. But no - around in circles again, and now THE LIBRARY WON’T EVEN LOAD, AND ALL IT CAN DO IS BE BUMMED AND SAD WITH IT’S UNAPPRECIATED SARCASM!!!

So, yeah…I really feel like this is a solid heap of garbage!

A player that has no capability to actually access the library, and can’t output audio, is a pretty damn useless player. I don’t understand why no one can even get the most basic functionalities that a player needs to have to work out of this pile of garbage!

Who do I talk to about a refund for my license? If you can’t even make a player play, then I have no intent on letting you thieves keep a dime of my money!
