For the past (insert large number) years, I have been collecting movies/TV Series … well I have too much, I guess.
I have MAXED my WD My Cloud PR4100 [Raid 5, 29.75 TB]. So I am looking for something more.
I want to find a NAS system that can hold more than 4 HD and includes a RAID architecture, and I hope the NAS has suitable hardware (Dual bandwidth, processor, and RAM).
In other words, I want something that will destroy any possibility of latency issues, or video lag, with a lot of space for me to grow. I read a “little” bit of Synology, but I thought I would come to the experts first before jumping the gun.
A “high”-end synology may work, depending on the price you are willing to expend. I have a DS920+ (4 bays, with support for the 5-bay expansion), and it has an ok processor. It’s a Celeron (Quad core, 4-thread, GeminiLake), but with the Intel processor it has HW accelerated transcoding. The passmark isn’t much to be desired (in software transcoding, it’s roughly 2K passmark per stream, but I found two software streams (one with subs) to be too much for it).
I’ve only had experience with the cheap(ish) Synologys. I’d LOVE to shell out for some of their higher-tier NAS’s, but I don’t feel I need them much any more. I built my own computer for my server, and simply use the NAS for storage.
If you want an all-in-one system, you can think of building your own, and installing a NAS-like OS into it.
You may want to take a look at FreeNas or Unraid. You provide the hardware for the Nas. I run Unraid on a server I built. Unraid will support up to 30 drives including cache and parity drives. Unraid also supports various sized drives. I have 9 drives in my system. You can build a nice system for less then a Synology would cost you and it is easy to add more storage as needed.
Interestingly, there is a (kind of) open Synology DSM OS for installation on other hardware. Someone took the modified Linux that Synology’s DSM is built on and worked on porting it to alternate hardwares. It’s called Xpenology. I don’t think I plan on messing with it, but it’s a fascinating thought.
