Help on 3D bluray's

Hi all. I have been using Plex on and off for a couple years now, and I love it.I have a fairly big assortment of 3D movies that I would love to get working on it. I have around 1300 movies on Vudu, and I’m tired of giving them money for the 3D stuff (which it looks like they don’t have as much as they use to). My main program for doing my DVD’s is MKV. I think I used it earlier in the year and did a bluray.

Please let me know if there is any other programs I need to help on my project. I don"t know if MKV will do it all or not. Thanks for any help.

from my experience, ripping 3d movies is a pain in the ■■■■.

even worse is finding clients which can actually play them back in 3d.

it’s been a long while since I last ripped a 3d movie, but if my memory holds, it goes something like this;

  • first thing is you need to know what your client supports, whether its SBS (side by side) or OU (over under), or even native interlaced (odd frames are one side, even frames are the other side).

  • what your client(s) are compatible with, will help you determine what/how you rip/re-encode.

  • rip with makemkv

this should get you what is normally an interleaved (see above) rip, which if played by most players will simply appear as 2d

  • once you have the native rip, use handbrake to remux/re-encode as either a SBS or OU encode. This will put the 2 stereo vision frames either side by side, or above/below each other. Unless you change the resolution, this will double the size of your file.

  • I don’t remember what they are, but there are various handbrake settings to facilitate this, either as pass-through/copy the video (not reencoding), or re-encoding to smaller resolution and/or bitrates.

  • it will most likely take you several trials and errors to figure out what the right settings are for handbrake and your client.

  • I would suggest using a small test segment to run your tests on (much shorter than repeatedly encoding a full length movie over and over).

  • google is your friend, but. 3d has gone out of popularity, so any guides you find may either be incomplete and/or missing pictures, or simply no longer accurate/up to date.

good luck

Thanks for the information. Yes. Most of the information I have found is pretty old. There are a few newer ones, but I want to try the programs that I have to try this (which you named them both,). I’ll start looking into them. Thanks again.

You will need the following to make this work.

Makemkv.
Raspberry Pi 3 (4 not currently supported)
LibreELEC
Plex for Kodi v17 (found on github)

I was thinking of using my playstation 3. I’ll look into the Libreelec. Thanks.

Don’t think it will work.

The only way to do it is with the setup I listed AFAIK.

Ok I have a pi 3.

there are some tv’s and 3d bluray players (that have plex) that support(ed) 3d over plex.

I do not know what the current status or availability of those are.

I would point to you to the forum search and suggest you start reading through all the 3d related threads you can find.

AFAIK there is not any one single references that you can go to, either here, or anywhere else on the internet.

It simply comes down to searching and reading until you find what you need (or give up).

I’ve played with a couple of TV’s that do 3D.
The first TV was sortof hard to setup but the second was great. The TV actually saw it was “3D” somehow and automatically switched over to 3D mode.

My Samsung UHD BluRay see’s the -HSBS or -HOU in the filename of the video and automatically plays it as a 3D File on my TV as well…

My Sony Android TV does not

My Firestick, allows it to play back as side by side or over under content, however when I go to the TV’s 3D to enable it, “Not available”

So yes, as others have said, this is definitely a combination of finding the right workflow, playback device, and client, for your specific use case… There’s not a one-size-fits-all for 3D unfortunately

I was thinking maybe try my 4K Firestick. That is another one I’ll try. Jason may ask how to do yours from disc to finished file?

I use: BD3D2MK3D

It’s got a bit of a learning curve, but it’s good for learning why you’re doing what you’re doing

I have both Gens of the Firestick 4K and neither plays correctly… The only device I can get it to reliably do this on is the Samsung UHD BluRay player… I am pretty sure samsung tv’s work too

Alright, thanks for all the info, I dont work this weekend so I will get a few 6 packs of Bud Lights and see what I can come up with.

Googling that, led me to @ media:3d[Bernard's Wiki] which seems to have a pretty detailed howto on 3d ripping.
