So, i created a new library, called Documentaries, using the TV shows type.
Problem is, i get the documentaries i have in the folder mixed in with my regular tv shows. I hoped it would split a new list in the dshboard only showing the documentaris in that docs folder. Same thing happened when i tried the Movies option… i now have tried the other videos option… it now has its own list, but the docu’s are all listed as single, instead of folders of episodes…
I just read that back… and hope it makes sense?
I was hoping my documentaries list wout be on its own, but structured like the tv shows list… Please help!!
I have been searching all over for info… and if someone has a nice simple dummies guide… that would be a huge help!
Re-added as a tv show type, named Documentaries… now i have folders of episodes, but it includes them with the recently added television list on the dashboard… would really like a seperate documentaries list… where new docs will show, and not interfere with the new tv lists… please help! Thanks…
Ok, another issue now… i have single documentary movies, that dont show up. loads of BBC ones not showing up…
The dashboard is a cornucopia of despair unfortunately. With no way to alter it’s layout or content we’re left with the cookie-cutter design the development team has decided is best for us and we’d better like the cookies the developers like.
Having said that.
Putting media into the correct library type is paramount to happiness when dealing with Plex.
TV Shows MUST go into a TV Show Library.
Movies MUST go into a Movie Library.
Clever arrangement of different libraries can better organize your media into something you can ultimately sense of. Sometimes a TV Show episode listed at TVDB (like a Documentary, for instance) will also be listed as a Movie at TMDB. I’m afraid you’ll have to investigate this possibility yourself - and after a while you’ll get good at it:

Documentaries will be tough for the most part. The vast majority of them will have no listing - unless you do as I do and start listing them yourself by joining the community at TMDB and creating a listing for a Documentary that doesn’t have a listing. You can also do this at TVDB if you’re so inclined.
As for the dashboard? Yea, good luck with that. Do as we do and deal with it the best you can either through substance abuse or religious activities, but you’re on your own there. Just do what ‘feels right’ and makes you 'feel better.
it would be pretty awesome if you could create a new library, but leverage the search capabilities of tvdb for example… but not end up with content nesting in with tv content.
Appreciate the response, and gutted there isnt an easy answer. Gotta figure out now which files dont show up, and move them to a new folder, and have to leverage the other movies category.
FileBot (link in my signature) can with almost 100% accuracy pre-match and re-name your media files in Plex Perfect fashion. If FileBot can’t find it, it’s probably not there to find. At any rate FB will cut a LOT of the legwork out of this procedure so I highly recommend it.
Please do a search in the ofurm with ‘documentary’ as search term. There are a lot of threads about it and some contain a great amount of insight and tips.

I solved this issue by creating 2 documentary library entries.
1 is for documentary series and setup to be a TV show library.
If the seasons and episodes are named and structured properly… You will have a library of documentary series which display like TV shows seasons and all.
2 is for single documentary shows and set up to be a movie library.
Plex (99%) of the time will find them and they will show up like single episode TV shows.
If you edit the libraries you can either have that library show up on the dashboard in recently added or not.
Don’t know if that’s the best way. but it was the only way I could find to deal with documentaries in a useful way.
