HEVC 480p Content Plays Squished almost like vertical phone

I have quite a few older movies and i’m on a Roku Ultra. Some show up as SD others show up as 480p (I don’t know if that makes a difference as they were all ripped from DVD sources).

The SD movies seem to scale correctly, but the 480p movies get incredible squished in the center of the screen, almost like a cell phone vertical video.

The movie plays fine, however, in a web browser. If I go into the movie settings, and turn down the video quality, then it seems to fix the scaling.

I shouldn’t have to turn down the settings for every movie just to watch it though. Am I doing something wrong? I’ve checked all the Roku settings and Plex App settings.

Sounds like a TV-specific setting - your television is handling the aspect ratio improperly. Are you able to watch 4:3 videos from other sources, or on other devices? If not, then check your TV settings and play around in there.

Yes. Like I said, it plays SD material fine in 4:3, just not 480p movies. My other friends on Roku’s are able to replicate this same issue on their Roku’s for 480p HEVC H265 movies so it sounds like the only thing we have in common is the Roku since it plays on our browsers just fine and we all have different TVs.
