Hide PIN entry so not everybody in the room can see it // mod: enter pin via remote’s keypad

please get inspired by Netflix - when logging into appleTv Netflix app, I can enter pin on connected iOS device and Netflix app shows just dots… That would be great to have on tvOS Plex app too…

Normally I only upvote instead of saying “me too” but it’s been years and this is incredibly frustrating to families with kids. I love Plex and have had a Plex pass for years, but a simple input from my phone to input the pin (exactly like Netflix on the Apple TV) would be a massive step forward.

I’ve come here to voice my desire for improvement and/or complaint for this sorry excuse for a PIN input method. It didn’t take my kids long to figure out what I was doing so I had to start standing really close in front of the screen to block their view. Pretty ridiculous.

I saw other threads on this topic from back in 2016, I think, so needless to say, I’m not too optimistic anyone is listening.

Crazy that people have been asking for this simple fix to improve the experience for four years without a fix.

Just got and AppleTV, installed Plex on it and found out that even using iPhone as remote I cannot enter pin without showing it to everyone. Please fix this, this is very bad user experience. I can’t remove the pin either since my kids will have access to my library otherwise.

I have this same issue on my Apple TV. The problem is that the Plex TV app doesn’t use the standard tvOS entry form for inputting the PIN.

The standard tvOS number entry form shows large blank number spaces—this can be seen in other streaming apps such as Netflix, HBO and Disney+. The native-style can be filled discretely via the iOS remote keyboard (from an iPhone or iPad), as well as via holding the Siri button on the remote (dictation).

Side note: on apps that allow dictation for the pin, I say a random bunch of numbers and hit the dictation button only for the numbers that are correct. This keeps my children from knowing the actual number.

For example, I say: “872*3456**93”
*Press the Siri button
**Release the Siri button
(3456 is the PIN)

In the end, this issue needs to be resolved by the PLEX’s iOS/tvOS development team by changing the to a standard number entry form for the PIN screen.

Since some remotes only have arrow keys + OK + back key, I was thinking about the following entry method:

It would be similar to the Fire TV method except that a long-press would enter the higher digits (since there is no extra button to switch modes). Also, the back button would first delete digits until the input was empty and then pressing it would back out of the input mode, with a long-press doing a cancel even with digits. The mapping of the number could be anything Plex likes, but let’s imagine (short press) ((long press)):

       (^) 1 ((^)) 6 (<-) Bksp
4 (<) (OK) 5 (>) 2
9 ((<)) ((OK)) 0 ((>)) 7
       (v) 3 ((v)) 8 ((<-)) Cancel

Since the Plex app already auto-checks the PIN after 4 entered digits, no key is needed to end PIN entry.

In my opinion, this would cover all remote users & would be a huge improvement on what is there now.

May 2022 and we’re still entering PINs for all to see…

I would also like to see this implemented, nothing else to add, fire stick handles this really well and it should be relatively simple to implement. Please and Thanks!

Other players already have this. This should be a pretty easy fix with a button combination like others have implemented.

I came across this issue the first time I used Plex on a Firestick years ago. 2023 and it’s still not fixed! It can’t be that hard Plex.

It’s honestly bizarre that this is still a problem, I came on here looking to see if it was being worked on for Apple TV, it is a terrible omen that it’s been an issue for multiple smart tv clients for like five years. This wont get fixed, right?

Nope. Many suggestions have been made to help give ideas to improve this but nothing has materialized on Plex’s end. :man_shrugging:t2:

Need to be able to just not display the pin cursor and as long as we start at center time, we should be able to go to the numbers needed and hit enter to input them without seeing it.

Unbelievable.
Almost 5 years later and NOTHING has been done to improve such a basic function.

None of the programmers have kids or what?

A Pin is pointless if someone can see what you are inputting. I requested this back in 2017!

Hi everyone! Just trying to get some feedback from us going on a bunch of ideas in this forum. There is some good stuff in this thread! This should be something that we can at least review internally and give some feedback on. Let me take this effort on as a task and go have a few conversations around this request. Stay tuned!

Please do this for Apple TV as well. Currently the Apple TV Remote app on my iPhone has the ability to pop up a keyboard (which is evident when you go to the search field on the Plex app on ATV). Could it be easy enough to trigger that input mode on the app by giving it a text field rather than the number “buttons” for the PIN?

The native FireTV PIN system doesn’t have a number pad at all, this is much more secure:

My kids are finally old enough to where I’m having to pin protect my account. When I pulled it up for the first time on my Apple TV my first thought was well…this isn’t going to work… Not going to repeat all the reasons why the current method is terrible as that’s already been covered adding my ask here as well for some innovations. Prompting the Plex app on the phone to login with Face ID would be awesome. Let’s bring this feature into 2024!
