Version 1.40.2.8395 did not solve this issue.
Nothing I‘ve tried seems to be able to fix this issue.
I‘m looking for a workaround in the meantime.
Whenever Plex attempts to transcode eac3 it starts to stutter.
Is there a way to tell PMS to NOT transcode eac3? (Even if video needs transcoding)
Can a Plex developer comment on this problem?
Here is some of my testing.
Important notes:
- Stuttering only occurs in my file that has EAC3 with a bitrate of 1024 kbps but not in any that are below 1000 kbps
- When direct play is in use (i.e. streaming device supports EAC3), all files play with no stutter.
- EAC3 is being transcoded to AAC
These are the scenarios I have tested as well as results.
- Plex (1.40.2.8395) installed as a TrueNAS Core plugin (FreeBSD jail) - Stutters
- Plex (1.40.2.8395) installed via docker compose in Ubuntu LXC container - Stutters
- Plex (1.40.2.8395) installed directly in Ubuntu LXC container - Stutters
- Plex (1.40.2.8395) installed directly in Ubuntu 24.04 Live Server VM - Stutters
- Plex (v.1.40.2.8395-c67dce28e) on Windows 11 - No Stutter
Unfortunate that this has gone on for at least 2 years, but this confirms that running in Windows is a workaround.
Edit: Is there anywhere that this issue is being investigated and documented in more detail that we can track and potentially contribute?
Same issue here on my Sony Android TV. Eac3 transcoding to opus stutters. There’s no reason it needs to transcode, other eac3 plays fine. @ChuckPa
Almost two years for this issue and no news for one year ? Is it even tracked somewhere on a Jira ticket or has this been dismissed as “Won’t Fix” ?

I am a long time Roku user, but decided to purchase a Nvidia Shield Pro. The Roku would always direct play EAC3. The Nvidia Shield Pro is trying to transcode EAC3 to Opus. WOW! This audio stuttering issue is horrible. Please, please, please fix this issue. I’m going to return this Nvidia Shield to Amazon, and stick with the Roku Ultra for now. Every movie in my library was encoded with EAC3.
Hello ! its July 2024 , i think we have waited enough what do you think ? can we fix this ■■■■■ ?
Thank you
Amazing how consistently plex ignores us.

Folks,
We’re testing what might finally be a fix for this.
Might I be able to get a sample file or two (or 60-120 seconds worth) which will replicate the problem again?
I know this is an OLD
bug. (almost as old as I am
)
Version 1.41.0.8992 did not solve this issue.
It is not in the release notes. You are just causing noise, though I understand why you feel like you should. In any case, you are not helping the issue.
