High CPU even though Hardware Decoding

Server Version#: 1.32.0.6918

Plex Dashboard is showing the three current streams are “(HW)” but my CPU is getting hit hard:

The CPU is an i5-7600. No GPUs.

I’m used to seeing only about 10-15% CPU usage when running HW transcoding.

It’s using software encoding. Do you have hardware accelerated video encoding disabled in Settings → (Server Name) → Transcoding? If so, try enabling it to see if that helps.

It’s showing “(HW)” in the Dashboard.

Here are my current settings:

Check the box next to “Use hardware-accelerated video encoding.” That will enable the server to use hardware-acceleration for the encoding process in addition to the decode. That should help with CPU utilization. If it works, you should see (hw) next to the second line of output (the 720P H.264 → Transcode) as well on the Dashboard.

Edit: Note, this will not affect streams already in-progress.

Trying…

Understood.

I tested it on a stream and it seems to be adding the (HW) to the second line now too. I’ll need to let the current remote streams end to see what impact it has on the CPU.

Thanks for the help so far!

Everything looks a lot better. CPU usage is way down. Thanks for your assistance!

You’re welcome, glad it worked!
