How can I make Plex Music display the file name instead of album and title?

I have a lot of old songs on my NAS. I created a music library, and it’s now in Plex. But because the metadata doesn’t include an album, artist, or title, it displays “unknown” for each song. How can I get Plex to display the file name?

It also doesn’t display any images, even though I have them in the folder:
.TPDLNA\art_cache\mnt\sda1

that is why.
use something like mp3tag , musicbraniz too add tags.

It involves hundreds of songs.
So I’m asking: How can I make Plex display the file name instead of the metadata?

It cannot do that. Plex is not a file browser.
How would you reliably determine the Album title out of a file name?

Without embedded meta tags, Plex can only deduce some information if your files are organized like this: https://support.plex.tv/articles/200265296-adding-music-media-from-folders/

If your file name or folder path contains all of these: Song Title, Artist name, and Album title,
AND these informations are organized in a uniform manner
(e.g. /Music/Artist/Album/Song Title.mp3 or maybe /Music/Artist_Album Title_Song Title.mp3)
then you can use software to parse that folder name and use parts of it to fill the embedded meta tags of your songs.
mp3tag is what I would use. It can process many files at once in this manner.

How would you reliably determine the Album title out of a file name?

They cant, I don’t care. I just want to see the file name.

So it’s also not possible to upload your own audio files? Because then it doesn’t display a name?

There is no file name for an album.
A track might have a file name, but not an album.

Okay, but there’s nothing I can do? I can view my various folders, click on them, and then see a list of music and audio files I’ve placed there, displayed with their file names.

You cannot. As I said, Plex is not a file browser.

@Daantje266 I think part of this comes down to a miss-understanding. What is your goal here? Plex can deal with several types of media, but the most important thing is to understand that plex library based player. That might require using some filename patterns into your metadata fields. Or to tweak how you store metadata to fit into a format that Plex can use.

I have both an audio book and YouTube based library, neither of those however can be treated like a normal library.

My goal is just to listen to music on my phone or Android Auto. But DS Audio doesn’t really work in Android Auto, and I find the app mediocre.

I don’t want editing all the metadata and changing file names, so I’ll have to look elsewhere. I find it stupid that there’s no option to simply use file names.

This is using a shoe as a hammer, not something the app was designed for.
