How can I tell if it's using HW transcoding?

I see the option, but when I mouse over the Activity (1080p to SD via Safari Plex Web) it says:

Video: Direct Stream

Audio: Transcoding DCA to AAC

Nothing about how it is going from 1080p to SD. How can it be “Direct” if there is all the transcoding going on?

Also, would PGS subtitles prevent HW encoding? I remember reading something about this.

@tfjunk

I have split you out of the other thread. You were accidentally hijacking it.

Video: Direct Stream

means it is being sent as is. Nothing is being modified.

The only transcoder activity is converting DCA -> AAC

PGS transcoding will show

PGS subtitle burning does not prevent HW decode or HW encode. The CPU is required to merge the PGS (image) layer with the video stream layer. The iGPU’s ASIC doesn’t support this type of rendering

Possibly it was .srt subs?
They are pretty friendly in most if not all clients.

I do have some SRT subtitles, I think I explicitly chose a PGS file, just to see about the transcoding speed. I think I need to find some time to redo my tests so I can better clarify any questions. The pointers so far have been helpful. If I can’t figure it out, I’ll come back with more specific questions. Thanks for the help.
