How do I fix Double NAT

I have been spending the last 2 days trying to fix it but it doesn’t work.
I have a Fritzbox 7490 as a modem router and TP-Link Archer C5400 as a main router and a WD My Cloud Home.
I forwarded ports 32400 on the fritzbox to the TP-Link router and ports 32400 to my My Cloud Home NAS from the TP-Link router.
Would anyone be able to help me out please?

You fix it by putting the Fritzbox in bridge mode and let your Archer handle NAT.

This is what I did last night. Worked for a while and I woke up this morning just to realise that it’s stopped working again.

You can’t do that.
The internal port number must be 32400
This cannot be changed.

The external port number however can be chosen relatively freely.

So, in the router which is closest to your server, you must change the internal port number to 32400

Yet, in the settings of Plex, you must still put the external port number (20486 in your case)

Why are you using 2 routers anyway?

Like this?

The first one handles tv services, phone lines and internet. The TP-Link one makes sure that there’s wifi around the whole house with 3 bands available too.

No. You must forward
internet 20486 → 1st router 20486 → 2nd router 20486 → plex server 32400
which means the second router needs a forwarding from 20486 external → 32400 internal

Which is problematic, because you are ‘fracturing’ your home network that way.
Since the second router still does NAT, the wired clients (which are connected to router 1) cannot connect directly to your wireless clients (which are connected to router 2).
This has severe implications for Plex.

If your router supports it, you should switch it into ‘AP mode’
which basically means, it doesn’t do NAT anymore but only connects the wireless clients directly to the network.

And if it doesn’t, assign the Archer a static IP outside your DHCP range of the Fritzbox and turn off the DHCP server on the Archer. Connect it to the Fritzbox/switch via the LAN port and you’ve just converted it to an AP.

That is quite expected. You cannot switch the router into AP mode by simply editing its IP address.

There must be a separate switch to flip (if it exists at all. Some router manufacturers strip these features out.
In which case you must look for alternate firmware for your specific router model, like DD-WRT, Tomato etc.)

I was following the instuctions on here too and it doesn’t talk about that type of firmware.

I guess I just won’t be able to share files with my family for now, everything I tried in the past few days has failed so far

Did you read what they say below:
“After changing the IP address settings, you’ll need to reboot your router, then log back into the router with the new IP address.”

and it doesn’t talk about that type of firmware.

Of course it doesn’t do that, it would be unsupported.

Look now this happens and it will work for a few hours only though

This is what I get when changing the iPv4 adress of the Archer to something outside the ip range of the fritzbox

Disconnect the WAN cable change your settings and then reboot the router. Connect the LAN port on the Archer to the LAN port on the Fritzbox/switch and you can then access the management UI from the static IP address you assigned it.

That worked.
It’s now in AP mode and I’ve forwarded the port 32400 externally and internally to the ip of the my cloud from the fritzbox. Somehow it is still displaying Double NAT

Check the external port to make sure it’s actually open

Says it’s closed. If only I could have this annoying fritzbox in modem mode…

Then the Fritzbox port forward isn’t configured properly or your ISP has you behind their NAT.

What is the WAN IP on the Fritzbox? Is it your public IP?

Yes

Then it has to be your port forward not set up correctly.

I tried for a year to get around the double nat.
I gave up and arranged for a static IP setup from my ISP.
Done!

After having tried all possible solutions to overcome the double nat problem (without success), I finally called my internet provider.

After explaining my exact problem, the guy in tech support provided me with a dynamic (instead of a static) IP - and half an hour later all my remote access troubles were a thing of the past.

Now when I go to the Plex app, it opens instantly and smoothly and the movie I have decided watch also starts immediately and plays without any issues for its entire duration.
