I’ve recently entered the Plex scene and want to setup a NAS using an old HDD and Netgear router. The issue I have with my router is that it does not come with ReadyCloud and so attempting to install Plex Media Server is a bit of a mind boggler.
Has anyone got some sort of work around in installing the server so I can turn off my PC and access my videos remotely?
Not sure about your router but I suspect it should have a SMB server that you would use to access the folders on your drive. You would just point Plex to the folders using a UNC path.
Remote access is through Plex which in turn has access to your drive. If you are asking about remote access to the drive directly, that would be something different.
I have the drive connected to my router and I want Plex to access that network location to stream my videos. The router is also connected to my PC but I intend to turn it off so using it as a server is useless.
The issue with most methods are that it requires my PC to be on or they use ReadyCloud which is not compatible with my netgear model.
How would I run the media server independently on that drive for the router to serve?
oh, ok I see what you are trying to do. You can’t do that. Plex server has to be running all the time on a compatible device and a router is not one of them that I know of… If you do not want to keep a PC on, then you will need to get a device like a Nvidia Shield Pro that you can run the Plex Server on. There are other devices too so you would have to research what would work the best for you.
See the documentation in my prior post for a list of supported platforms.
Plex is supported on a Nighthawk X10 router. See Netgear Nighthawk X10 Router for additional details, including limitations on transcoding, streaming, and subtitles.
Regarding the Shield, Plex Media Server, PMS, runs on the 2019 Nvidia Shield Pro. It is not supported on the non-Pro “tube” model (the documentation is not necessarily clear on this). You can also run PMS on pre-2019 Shields, both Pro and non-Pro models. Additional information regarding running PMS on a Shield: Nvidia Shield.
