I believe so and had my users test it as well. Give it a try. I have an RTX 2060 Super.
Hmmmm. I’m running Windows 10 and my CPU was struggling when I had tone mapping checked. The client was constantly buffering.
And you upgraded to the 64-bit media server?
I just looked at my install, how can tell if I have the 32 or 64-bit version? I have 1.29.0.6244 and I’m sure I would have installed the 64-bit version originally if given the option.
Restart the server, then look at the top of the Plex Media Server.log.
Good question. I couldn’t find that either. I only know I downloaded the 64-bit version and upgraded my 32-bit server. My server version is now 1.29.1.6276
Check out this thread. Read all the way to the bottom.
“Plex Media Server v1.29.0.6244-819d3678c - Microsoft PC x64 - build: windows-x86 windows”
So, that’s confusing…is it the 32 or 64-bit version of Plex? It seems to be running “C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\Plex Media Server.exe”, which leads me to believe it’s the 32-bit version.
My verified 64 bit version is reporting
INFO - Plex Media Server v1.29.1.6260-420892357 - Microsoft PC x64-x64 - build: windows-x86_64 windows
in the first line of the log.
If you want to be sure, just download the 64 bit installer below and run it.
Gotcha. Yeah, it would appear that I’m running the 32-bit version because I don’t have the “_64” at the end of my first line.
If I download the x64 version and install it over top of my current one, will it retain all of my settings?
Yes.
Just be careful to not use any type of “Registry cleaner” or “uninstaller” software during the upgrade. (e.g. if you have “CCleaner” lurking in the background, close it)
Ok, it’s definitely the 32-bit version that I have installed. When running the 64-bit installer, it says that the 32-bit version was detected and will be uninstalled. Am I still good to proceed because it’s the Plex installer that’s doing the “uninstall”?
That’s the intended way, yes. Uninstall the 32 bit version, then install the 64 bit version.
That worked perfectly. As usual, thanks for the help :).
Btw, I assume the 64-bit version of PMS is somewhat newer, right? I probably just originally installed the 32-bit one because it was the only option at the time and never paid attention to the release of the 64-bit version.
No, it’s just wider. ![]()
So, even with the 64-bit PMS installed now, I’m getting a lot of buffering when forcing it to convert 4K content and tone mapping enabled. Plex Transcoder is only using about 35% of the CPU and 25% of the GPU though.
I am running an AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-Core Processor, 3.70 GHz. I am not seeing any real usage on it, but do remember about 35% GPU usage.
Well, that CPU is worlds better than what I’m using, so that’s probably the issue :).
It’s not your CPU. I have a much older CPU(i7-860) and a weaker video card(Quadro M2000) and my system has no problems doing (3) 4K transcodes concurrently and my CPU is only at 30% capacity which is most likely from transcoding audio.
Are you burning in subtitles because hardware transcoding doesn’t support it.
Do you have HDR tone mapping enabled?
Yes, I have HDR Tone Mapping enabled.
