How do I manage music Genres better? Plex classifies almost everything as "Pop/Rock"

I’m using the latest version of Plex Media Server 1.32.5.7349-8f4248874

I only use Plex for listening to music via Plexamp, nothing else.

I’m trying to figure out how to manage music Genres. I started by deleting all Genre tags from the FLAC files in my music library, because there were tons of different genres and they weren’t all typed in similarly anyway. I thought “Plex Music” would be smart about assigning genres based on crowd sourced data or AI or something.

But the genres that Plex assigns on the backend are super inconsistent. It puts most rock and pop under “Pop/Rock” (4242 albums) which is fine I guess, but then there are a handful of albums that get slotted under “Pop-Rock” (dash not slash, 3 albums), “Pop Rock” (7 albums), “Punk / New Wave” (1 album), etc etc etc. Note for example, I have hundreds of albums that would go under “Punk / New Wave” so I don’t understand why it’s pulling out 1 of those albums into the “Punk / New Wave” genre and not all the rest that go in there. Why the inconsistency?

There are also other odd things like putting Full Moon by the Charlie Daniels Band under the genre “Religious” which is not correct at all.

What’s the best strategy to fix this? Is there some online database or service that I can use to EASILY and quickly assign appropriate genres to albums, but without splitting everything into 1,000 sub-genres? Like “Punk”, “Indie”, “New Wave”, “Rock”, “Psychedelic”, “Alternative” would probably be enough for the rock type of songs in my library. I don’t need obscure genres like “Electro Dance Rock” or “No Wave” (is there even any consensus on what these genres are?).

Is this even worth the trouble? I feel like Genre classification is super subjective anyway, to the point of being kinda useless. But it does seem like Plex uses Genres for various functions, so I’d at least like to try to get everything sorted into correct genres.

Also what the heck is the difference in Plexamp between Genres and Styles? The Styles seem to be much more correct than the genres.

Thanks!

Then use styles instead of genres.

So there’s no reason to worry about the Genres?

No. If you don’t insist on using genres over styles, there is no problem.
