Where is Plex getting genre information for music?

Server Version#: 1.32.0.6950

Where on earth is my Plex server getting it’s genre information from for music? It certainly bears little relation to the genres I’ve attached to the files and is, in some cases, frankly bizarre. I’d like to be able to fix it but I can’t see how.

Thanks

John

Plex is reading your embedded tags, if you tell it to.
You might actually be looking at “Style” or “Mood”, not genre.

No definitely not looking at style or mood. I discovered that Plex attaches genres to the composers as well as the albums, and I think it’s these that are truly bizarre. I’ve fixed most of them now but it’s a lot of work that really shouldn’t be necessary. All I want it to do is take the genre tags that I’ve embedded in the .flac files - really not interested in style, mood, or any finer grain than ‘This composer is classical’, ‘this group is jazz’, etc.

The Genre tags in your files only describe the genre of the track. Not that of the artist or the composer.

Ah, that last tip was helpful, thanks. Someone has been putting some pretty dodgy information up on Plex Music, then. Who knew that Grieg composed Jazz? Also a couple of classical composers also do pop and rock! And I wouldn’t have described Mendelssohn as Easy Listening, either, though I suppose that’s a matter of taste.

Anyway, thanks, that should make me much happier.

I believe, if you allow Plex to look online for genres, they come from AllMusic.com. I just checked there, and Grieg is indeed tagged with “Jazz,” and Mendelssohn is tagged with “Easy Listening.”

That would account for it. And Prokofiev is tagged with Pop/Rock!

This is why I do my best to avoid depending on data from online music databases. :slightly_smiling_face:
