How do I point Plex to use my RAM to transcode on Mac

I’m not sure if this was answered here , I apologize is there is a thread already created, but I could not find it. How do I point my Plex in settings to use RAM to transcode?

I see the transcoder temporary directory field in settings, but it’s empty and there is no drop down menu. What script or path do I need to enter to have Plex to use RAM to transcode?

Search terms would be ram disk or ram drive. If you have set on up on your mac, point the plex transcoder to the directory the ram drive is mounted to.

I think I understand, once I create a RAM disk, I can just drag the icon of the RAM disk to the transcoder field and it will populate the path?See attached image, does this look correct? Screen Shot 2020-01-29 at 11.06.27 AM

The quotation marks look a bit odd, what do I know of Mac OS (nothing)…
Apart from that it looks ok. Restart the server and try running a transcoded session. If transcoding fails, there is something wrong.

Hello! Thank you for all your help. It worked! It was much easier than I thought. My RAM I snow doing the transcoding and I do see an increase in speed. Especially when I’m forwarding or rewinding.

Can you explain how you created a RAM disk or link whatever article you used? Thanks!

EDIT: I just followed Coxeroni’s suggestion and I found it. I’ll let you know how it goes for me.

Sure, let me know if it doesn’t work and I’ll list everything.

This is awesome thanks, will update and see how it goes when I get home!

I have everything set up and it’s seems to be good. Quick question, are the quotations in the path necessary on Mac?

I would say no. Mac is Unix based, and in Linux you only need them when you have spaces in the folder name somewhere. So if you don’t have spaces, I would say they are not necessary. But again, I have no clue about Mac

Hello, no need for the quotations.

Hi guys, I have setup a 2GB ramdisk on my Mac PMS. It gives in error that it does not have enough disk to convert on large 4K files. I’ve up my ramdisk all the way to 16GB and it still gives me the same error. Anybody experiencing this or better yet have a solution? I am also trying to limit my Mac SSD wear from PMS transcoding by using ramdisk. Thanks in advance!

32 gig is about the minimum recommended size for using ram transcoding if you want to avoid errors and problems.

64g ram/32g ramdisk.

more if you want to be transcoding multiple large streams and/or dvr many/long playing videos.

I foresee users with Live TV & DVR having recording issues in the future as more people read this thread and switch to Ramdisk/tmpfs.

Hopefully in 1.18.7 they(Plex) change location the Session files are written to.

Found my error issue. My transcoding throttle duration was set to way too high. Put it back to 30 seconds and using 2GB RAM disk with no errors.

Thanks for the quick response though.
