Ok think I’m having an issue. Want to start transcoding through ram, but need some help figuring out what’s wrong. Got the idea from a tech youtuber. Video link here: https://youtu.be/TL6IpfZtvSw
-upgraded to 16gb ram in my rig.
-downloaded imdisk toolkit to create a ramdisk.
-opened ramdisk configuration
-set-up 10gb and clicked launch at windows startup
-opened plex webserver
put R:\ (my ram drive) in the transcoding spot
-saved changes
-started a movie but I am not seeing it transcode on the dashboard or under the R:\ drive.
as in the video is direct playing vs. being transcoded?
if so… you can enforce a transcode by changing the playback quality on your Plex client.
if the video is transcoding but not using the newly set path, try rebooting your server for the setting to take effect. I’m not sure if Plex will ignore the temporary transcoding path if it expects the transcoding output will be larger than the space left.
Rebooted the server, and the videos are still playing as direct playing. Change Playback quality? Can you give me detailed steps to make that change. I see quality under Setting, Plex Web, Quality is this where you are talking about?
I play my media through home network primarily, but I do have users that access the media mobile streaming.
The main purpose of setting up the ram transcoding is to allow more users other then myself without bogging down my computer. I have not run into that issue yet, but I am trying to be proactive.
If you dedicate 10 GB of your RAM to the disc, leaving only 6GB to the OS and Plex, I’m not sure you will see performance actually improving.
A RAM drive is something you could ponder if you have 32GB in total or more.
I was running the server, plex, and OS for the last 2 months using 8gbs. Just doubled my computer to 16gb and wanted to dedicate the 10gb to plex. Not trying to supply the world with movies or stream 4k, just wanted to share my media with small family. At max I was looking to have 3 to 5 streams running at once. nothing fancier then that. lol
Then I will remove the ramdisk. Just want to be proactive, and not have my family kill my computer or have consistent lag issues. You know teenagers and their binge watching. lol
