How do you configure ad detection in libraries without DVR?

Continuing the discussion from the latest Beta ( 1.41.0.8911) Announcement for Plex Media Server:

How do you configure ad detection in libraries without DVR? I don’t find the DVR Settings shown in this support article:

Kinda want to set it for just marking them instead of deleting commercials to start out.

Thanks,

Chris

The setting can be found when editing each library you want to enable it on.

The setting is only for marking ads to be skipped and not deleted. Deleting ads can only be done during recording.

I can’t get the ad detection to even work in this way. I have a section of “sports talk shows” which I record through the Channels App and then add into my Plex server. I set the “ad detection for recorded items as described.” But nothing happens and there is no notations or skip button when watching these shows.

“for recorded items” means things that were recorded via the DVR in Plex. The server can tell the difference between things it recorded and stuff just added to the library.

If you recorded it via another app then Plex Media Server has no idea it is a recorded item so you need to set that to “for all items”

Thanks but it still is not working. I changed the setting to “all items” and did a refresh of metadata with no success.

Afaik you need to “Analyze” not refresh.

There does seem to be an issue with it not showing any status in activity menu for this. However I just moved an episodes with commercials to a different library, enabled for all items and hit analyze and I can see it start adding the ad markers in the xml

I am trying this now. Where can you find the xml?

See XML info. If you’re using Safari, you’ll need to enable developer features in the browser as well in order to view the XML.

The information will be toward the bottom of the info, in sections named “Marker.”

This feature does not work for me at all. I have tried the suggestions in the post and it is not working. Frustrating!

have you tried analyzing a single episode?

Yes, I tried that as well. I am wondering if there is an issue when bringing in something recorded from Channels App which detects and can skip commercials when played within their app

I have been trying to do the same with a library of a few imported recordings. All the other detection work (intro, credit, etc).

Commercial detection just does not not work on the library despite Ad detection “For All Items” being enabled and the DVR configured to “Detect Commercials and Mark for Skip.”

I even reinstalled the server three time, once on a different machine to make sure.

It would appear the feature is broken.

Could one of you put a problematic file on some online storage like dropbox or google drive and message me a link to it.

They get detected fine for me with your file after analyzing show, so the file isn’t the problem. It made 4 commercial markers.

Likely going to need your server logs to make a report

.

thanks for logs @mackandall

Just wanted to double check that you tried analyzing the show ( not the library). Which is still a problem but one about when it kicks off.

Plex

Yes that is how I did it. The funny thing is that if I select intro and credits detection it runs those but not the commercial detection. I am wondering if I am missing some sort of linux dependency that would make it work. I plan to try a Mac or windows install when I get back from work later. In the meantime here are what my settings look like:

I did a windows install and test and got it working. Cleaned off everything and reinstall on my linux installation and it started working as well.

Should the commercial scanning show up in Activities? I only verified it was working by going to the folder with the files and seeing the text files created and then deleted after the info was added to the database.

Thanks for the help.

Is it currently unable to remember a simple cue of shows to scan. I set it to scan 10 different series in a row, but it appears to stop after each. I then have to manually select the next series only after the one before it is done. Plex doesnt seem to remember that it has another show lined up for scanning.

OK thanks for info. I think there seems to be a few things missing from this feature from when we added the ability to do for any file. I don’t have any ETA but we have made reports about them.

The ads do not seem to be detected on non DVR created media unless you manually click analyze. Needs to automatically detect them when media is added like other activities.
