Edit: of course i feel a bit silly after realizing that if you are live streaming plex will play/pause for you as well as rewind and fastforward. However, I assume this works by pausing playback while still downloading into a buffer which has a few negative side effects.
- you cannot fast forward unless you have paused/rewound and therefore can only skip ahead to the front of the buffer
- i assume the buffer will either begin to overwrite itself or stop the stream at some point. exactly how long does it buffer?
So if there is no other way to respond/control playback. is it in the pipeline? I realize most plugins couldnt do anything with enhanced control like i am asking for, but unless plex is going to incorporate some of the adanced functions of plugins like eyetv and netflix there is definitely need for this type of control.

I already know that, disappointingly, plex provides no direct way to hook into the keyboard/remote. However, I assume there is someway for a plugin to respond to generic commands like play/pause and skip. Unfortunately the only mention of this behavior in the documentation is about “site maps” and the documentation specifically states if i have access to the stream directly (i do) then i shouldn’t use a site map, but gives me no indication of how i should respond to basic playback commands. I would very much like to play/pause this stream as well as skip forwards and backwards!
Additionally I will award bonus points if somebody can tell me how to respond to the number pad. Thus far I have resorted to a helper application to intercept the keys, but obviously I dont want to do that if i dont have to. I know number keys may seem like they arent valuable in the context of plex, but I have several plugins that would be greatly enhanced by using them:
- EyeTV ought to be able to change cahnnels with them
- a plugin for viewing home security cameras ought to be able to switch cameras with them
- dvd playback plugin ought to be able to jump to chapters with them
- im sure somebody somewhere has other plugins that would be greatly enhanced with this
