I launched the latest Plex beta and to my surprise, I was prompted to connect to the TV app. What shows are supported? Only streaming titles or library titles too?
It is new. It only works in the US for now, and only the Movies&Shows streaming titles (There may be some obscure items that the TV app cannot search for as it depends if it has a Gracenote match) . It will likely never be library stuff.
Thank you! Unfortunate that library content won’t work. That’s the dream, but I know such things are out of Plex’s hands.
Dont leave Europe out. This feature is sick!
Thanks!
Edit: wait. Only the crap thats availiable for free? Not the movie and tv libraries Ive created myself?
Pretty useless if it’s not for the Library content. I disabled all the “Free” stuff anyway. And only US, strange.
It is only streaming stuff because we essentially have to tell Apple everything that is in our catalogue ahead of time. It isn’t like a live search. We don’t have any real control over it being US only for now as soon as we can open it up to other areas we will.
As I understand it, Plex has to provide its content catalog directly to Apple in some way for it to be available in the TV app. It doesn’t read the Plex app directly, but rather gets its data from the cloud.
This is why it’s not possible for library content — at least not unless Apple significantly redesigns how the TV app works.
I’m guessing at this point, Plex has offered up its full catalog, of which I believe some content is available only in the U.S., so of course the TV app needs to restrict it to the U.S. It could also just be part of a staged rollout, but honestly I tend to agree that I really couldn’t care less if it’s just for the streaming content. The Plex UI beats out the TV app IMHO anyway.
It sounds like Apple never considered “home streaming” as something they wanted to offer in the “TV” app. Looks like I’ll be keeping my tile home screen for now.
