Just saw this post. First off, you might be in the wrong section of the forum. This is for using the Shield as a server. Are you also using the Shield as your PMS? If not, let me know and I’ll move this to the Shield as a client section.
Can you provide me those videos that work and don’t work so we can test them?
So I found some weird stuff when having the file in 10bit 4k HEVC with AAC vs. 10bit 4k HEVC with AC3. When having AC3 as default track direct play is fine, AAC I get frame dropping. Same is true for 1080p, codec level is 5.1 High profile. Going to keep searching for more combos. Hope we get some progress here @MelMicNL , also if you could post a sample the I’ll look at it too because the MediaInfo looks good.
I think we are making progress, especially with a big chief here (I mean that in a positive way).

Thanks for the reply.
I am using the Shield as PMS. All media is stored on a Synology NAS (wired).
This is a 2 second clip, in 4k direct from iPhone, which does NOT work. The spinner will show, crashing PMS and only a reboot of the Shield will fix it: Access via Synology
This is the same 2 second clip, but converted to 1080p with Handbrake, and this one plays fine: Access via Synology
@aZOMBIEonCRACK is expriencing the same issues and is testing different files/codes etc.

So PMS crashes? You can continue to use the client, but can’t access your server?

Not sure if it is always the same, but after the never-ending-spinner-animation, nothing else will play, and eventually you’ll get a ‘Plex has crashed’ error. Then the Shield will work fine but Plex won’t find a PMS anymore. Not sure what happens on @aZOMBIEonCRACK 's system though…

It’s like PMS gets stuck in a transcode stage, even if you try to stop the playback in the Shield app you will still see it trying to transcode and play in the status of the Plex desktop GUI. Working with the original .mov clip and trying different containers with different audio results in the same problem.
Yes I also think it is the transcoder. But it should bnot transcode at all. Also: try to ‘optimize’ the content: it will show up in Server Settings in the optimize queue but it will hang at 0% or 1%.
I tried to trick Plex and used a profile editor to set the file at L4.1 without luck. I’m really throwing up my hands here and I would assume it boils down to reference frames, b-frames, etc. to see what is causing it. My first try was using different audio codecs and what I gained from that is knowing when a movie file has 7.1 audio and when PMS tries to encode to AAC 2.0 it’ll loop.
I’m going to keep looking into this @MelMicNL but due to work/life time is limited…unless Plex will send some money my way to try different things lol

Appreciate your time and effort, though I was hoping for some input from Plex Support  seems weird that there is so little communication, while surely this is a wider spread problem since it seems to be an issue for all Shield owners running PMS.
@MelMicNL - Sorry about that. I didn’t get a chance to test your samples and now the links are invalid. I thought I had downloaded them already but can’t find them now. Can you provide me new links?

@MelMicNL - I managed to test the sample file you provided but I could not reproduce the crash. The file played perfectly fine for me. Just to confirm. This was on a Shield acting as both the server and the client.
@“MovieFan.Plex” Yes, Plex is PMS and client. It’s very annoying that somehow your setup is working fine, since @aZOMBIEonCRACK and a friend of mine all experience the issue.
Yes, this is the same file with the error that occurs. Causes to have loading symbol for about ~20 secs. then say “Playback has stopped because the connection to the Plex Media Server has been lost. Please ensure the server is available and retry.” Then the Plex app will be unresponsive and I would have to hard power reset.
I am using the PMS on Shield and also client, I have PMS on my NAS but did not (and will not) try that as my primary PMS.
Can you guys confirm the version numbers for both PMS and the client? I must have something different. I’m running PMS Beta 1.9.4 and client Beta 6.6.0.

Yes, I am. Just saw the PMS update for 1.9.5.4339 and will update then come back to the post to see if that changes anything.
