How force 'Direct Play' on homevideo content?

I’m still not able to reproduce the crash. These files still play fine for me. I’ve tried reverting the app and PMS to previous versions and it still works. I’m at a loss. I’m going to file this issue anyways with the devs and see if they have any ideas.

That’s strange that it’s happening to us and not your setup, did you have any XML file edited like I’ve read on some posts for better Shield performance? I just have the '15 non-pro hooked to PR4100 without it being rooted. What are we missing here compared to your setup?

I have a Pro model connected through a Pioneer AV receiver… maybe the receiver part is different in our setup?

I don’t know what’s different. I do not have a custom XML or anything like that just to make sure I am testing the same as you guys. I also have the older model 16GB non-pro version. The file is saved onto a older model WD NAS. I don’t have a receiver hooked up.

That might be a hint…! It is not easy for me to connect the shield directly to my tv, but maybe I can try this later, if so; I’ll report here.

Found a long enough cable and connected the Shield directly to the tv, same problem.

I have NO idea how it is possible that 3 devices have the problem, but @“MovieFan.Plex” has a device that plays fine. :frowning:

I don’t know either? Do you have a longer file you can share with me? Maybe that can trigger the problem.

I downloaded your test sample files and I got the exact same behavior as you. On your 4k test file, yellow circle until I got "connection lost. After that, I can’t play anything. Had to reboot the Shield to get playback working again.

@“MovieFan.Plex” . I run PMS beta 1.9.5 and plex app 6.7.1 on Shield Pro. Shield directly connected to a 1080p TV hdmi 1.4

@“MovieFan.Plex” No, don’t have a file at the moment, and I’d have to make one so give me some time. However… pretty sure that every .mov file in 4k directly from an iPhone will trigger this.

And considering that we have another user - thank you @rouq - here now I honestly do not think the duration matters :frowning:

Any updates? Still working fine only on Plex’ systems I guess?

If only there’d be an alternative to Plex, I’d switch in a second. Can’t believe this doesn’t get any priority; I’d think lots of Shield owners want to use PMS and have iPhones or iMovie/Final Cut Pro homevideos…

There is. Check out Emby. Not perfect, but if/when you do run into issues, devs react quickly on the forums.

That said, I believe most Shield users just don’t run into this issue… I don’t.

Perhaps you could try using Kodi/SPMC with the Plex for Kodi addon as a workaround for now?

I’ve had a couple other people try your file and it works for most except one. However, it does not crash for this person. Just the spinner, but this could be cancelled. Don’t know what is causing the different behavior. We are still looking.

Same here, but none of the four people I asked was able to play and everyone has the crash problem. But this somehow seems to be bad luck, cause everyone but us have this issue it seems…

I honestly don’t understand cause I have a 100% failure rate.

Back to the core issue: a few PMS versions ago, there was an option ‘Force direct play’ (or something, I can’t remember the exact name). Toggling this setting would mean I CAN play the files just fine. So why why why was this removed? I read this is because PMS is supposed to me smart enough to know when to transcode, but clearly it isn’t (and people want this option back).

That was an in-app setting. I believe it was removed because they’re pushing the automatic bitrate option they’ve introduced… Not saying it’s a great idea, I just think that’s why.

An no, emby server doesn’t work on the Shield.

AVR - 950 hwk Samsung via HDMI Dolby Atmos
Direct Play - Auto
Direct Stream - Auto
Passthrough - Auto
Burn Subtitles - Automatic
Refresh Rate Switching - ON
Local Quality - Original Quality
Remote Quality - Original Quality

My PMS Version on Shield is Version 1.4.3.3433, is that the last one? if not how can i update on shield?
I get the error:
Playback has stopped because the connection to the Plex Media Server has been lost. Please ensure the server is available and retry.

Only when i switch to AC3 than it works…

And i some mkvs, they work fine, i dont understand that…

please help!

You are running an old pms version, the latest one is 1.9.6. If the update doesn’t show up in Google Play app, then on a computer with a browser, go on Google play. Search for plex media server, click install. Log in using your Shield’s Google account. Select your Shield in the drop down menu. This will push the latest pms on your Shield and also link pms to your Google account. Next pms update should appear in Google play app.

Update and try again. I’m not saying it will solve your problem, put that’s the first step.
