This is another user with the same problem.

Really hope Plex is not giving up on this because somehow only people from Plex don’t have the bug.

@maniblu To me, it seems your issue is different then the one which is mentioned in this thread, you just found a new issue with this thread :wink: congrats :wink: (Plex is far from perfect on Shield).

@MelMicNL
Sorry i didnt want to hijack this thread.

I suggest you start a new thread, and explain your situation in detail. People surely will help and you’ll get more exposure.

I normally don’t respond to forums, but this issue is so ridiculous it’s funny. Why in the world would Plex ever remove direct play? I really don’t care what their reasoning is, it was just plain down right stupid. There are a ton of us out there that have a pile of movies on drives or Nas boxes that will play direct without requiring transcoding. Why would we want to put more wear and tear on our hardware if it’s not required? I came back to Plex again to give it a go, but have the same issues as thousands of others. Can’t play from my Nas to my tv just buffers. Yes, brand new TV and a newer Nas. TV plays these fine directly from the Nas.

Plex, please stop blaming people’s equipment and look at your software and your screw up. I think we should keep complaining about this issue until they fix it. Until then I will pass on the pass. I would recommend to anyone else to stay away until this is fixed.

Plex did not remove the option to Direct Play. We removed the option “Force Direct Play”. If your file is compatible with what your device says it can support, then it will still direct play. Using that previous option would help in cases where a device was reporting it’s capabilities incorrectly, but more often than not, users were using it to play incompatible files and then report back to us “why does the image look bad, why is there no audio, etc.”

I’m not sure whats going on in this case, since the file does direct play for me but not the OP. I also cannot recreate the crash the OP describes when the video is transcoded. In this case, the option to force a direct play helped before and could possibly help now.

We have seen the requests and the need to override a device’s decision to transcode in certain scenarios and hope to bring the feature back in a future update.

I’m still not sure what is going on. I’ve had a few others test your file and no crash.

I appreciate the feedback, it would be nice to see if back. Just to clarify, you said “We have seen the requests and the need to override a device’s decision to transcode in certain scenarios”

I would bet if you took a poll on this forum, you would find this is a lot bigger problem then just certain scenarios. I will admit the tv version of this software has gotten a lot lot better.

With all respect; I find this extremely strange. No ‘normal’ user is able to play these files, the only people for which is does play are you and some of your contacts. All regular users experience the crash.

It’s just so extremely annoying not being able to play home videos shot with iPhones… To illustrate how ridiculous this is: I now have had to install KODI on my Shield, just to play these videos… insane…

@MovieFan.Plex

I tried his video on my shield running PMS version 1.10.0.4523 and I got exactly the same behavior as the OP. So I tried it using PMS running on a Windows 10 pc and it worked. Pms transcoded the video, the reason in the overlay was: “Cannot play UHD at 30.000 frame per second on this device”. So seems to be related to transcoding this video on the Shield. My Shield is connected to a Yahama receiver (HDMI 2.0b) and the receiver is connected to my 1080p TV (HDMI 1.4).

What is PMS decision process of selecting transcoding? For no reason at all my frontend, AFTV 4K, decides to transcode when it’s completely capable of DirectPlay. Also able to replicate that on my Nvidia Shield Pro, which is also my PMS Server running Beta. This is happening on Plex DVR Recorded Content.
