How to change an incorrect band name tag

I just added a compilation album to my database and it comes up as an album by a band that is already in my database but that has nothing to do with this compilation. It should be Various Artists. When I try to change the Artist Name it just doesn’t accept the changes. How do I force changes in a band’s name?

Compilation albums need the ‘AlbumArtist’ meta tag populated with identical content for all tracks of an album. (usually “Various Artists”)

All albums with a certain Album Artist content must be located in an “Artist folder”, like so:

Music/
   Various Artists/
      Sampler Title 1/
         1- track title - track artist.mp3
         ...

      Sampler Title 2/
         1- track title - track artist.mp3
         ...

That’s exactly how I tag them (Album Artist = Various Artists). I have several other compilations in my collection that don’t have this issue. I always tag my content the same way, so that’s why I don’t understand this problem. When I use Fix Match it comes up with the right album, but it doesn’t change the fact that it lists the album under a wrong single artist that is also in my library but has no connection to this compilation.

I kind of fixed it. The problem seems to be not with the compilation album I just added but with the .wav album of the artist Plex attributes the compilation to. Removing that artist entirely from my database fixed the problem. New problem now… how to get these .wav files tagged correctly. Plex doesn’t seem to care what I put in at Artist or Album Artist. It only takes info from the file name apparently. Though I have other .wav albums that are displayed correctly…

Plex cannot read meta tags from wav files.
Convert them to flac.

That’s strange. I’ve checked, I have four more .wav albums in there that are displayed properly.

Do you have ‘Prefer local metadata’ activated in the properties of your library?
(Don’t change it yet, just check it please)

I actually changed that yesterday as one of my attempts to fix my problem. All my music libraries have this option activated. I didn’t see any changes after that.

You are telling Plex to look at meta tags, but for wav files there are no meta tags that plex can read.

Look up the album on musicbrainz.org
On there, is it attributed to Various Artists or to some other artist?

If you can’t find the album at all on musicbrainz, you should really go the Flac way, including tagging it meticulously.

I use Mp3Tag as well. I converted the wav album that gave me trouble to flac and tagged all tracks correctly. Still, five tracks were given a wrong track number in Plex (the same five that gave me trouble when I used wav). Corrected that in Plex so now all is displayed correctly. The Various Artists album that had the original problem for this topic displayed correctly after I removed the wav album. The wav was an album by Jolly (and it is on Musicbrainz, no attributed to Various Artists).
