Music Metadata refuses to accept artists name change

I have a number of compilation albums with tracks by various artists and arrange the music folders like this:

Various Artists
—Hits of The 80’s
------CD1
---------Track1
---------Track2…
------CD2
---------Track1
---------Track2…

With previous versions of Plex if you left the album artist in the ID3 File Tag blank then Plex would take the folder name ‘Various Artists’ for the artists name in metadata.

With the latest version it assigns an apparently random artist name to these albums. So I now have 25 such compilation albums all by “The Mammas and The Papas” rather than “Various Artists”. (I actually only have one track by the Mammas and the Papas in my entire library)

If you try and manually change the artist name on these albums, Plex refuses to accept this edit, and the artist name reverts to the same error.

Is this a known problem please and is it being examined?

Tag all your compilation albums with ‘Various Artists’ as the Album Artist.
Don’t leave the Album artist empty with those types of albums.

If you have a regular album where only one track has a different ‘artist’ tag (even if it’s just an added “featuring …”), populate the Album Artist tag of all tracks.

Only one album per folder on disc.

Hi Otto, Thank you for yout reply, which makes perfect sense if it worked…

I have tried changing the ‘artist’ ID3 tag for all these albums to ‘Various Artists’ but unfortunately that made no difference. I also have ‘Prefer Local Media’ enabled in the advanced library settings to prioitize local tags.

I also just tried to delete one of the ‘Various Artist’ album entries in the library using Plex. It not only deleted the album I selected, but also 15 other albums that were also ‘Various Artist’ albums. The actual files were also deleted as well, even though they were write protected in the file system! (Luckily I have a backup).

With respect, I think the developers have some significant issues/bugs to correct in this latest release.

Verify your mp3 files are tagged with ID3v2.3 tags (UTF-16)

In the properties of your music library, both the ‘Agent’ and the ‘Scanner’ need to be set to ‘Plex Music’.

Then perform the Plex Dance “light” (meaning step 4 can be omitted).

That’s what the “delete” feature is intended to do
