How to force chapter thumbnails regeneration

Hi all,
recently I’ve accidentally deleted my Media Cache folder (containing the thumbnails preview) during a server migration.

While thumbnails are correctly generated for the newly introduced media, I’m not able to force Plex to regenerate them for the historical ones.

I’ve tried:

  • Analysing the media from Plex Web
  • Disable/Enable media thumbnails generation
  • Force media generation via command line, ex.

“Plex Media Scanner.exe” --item 60116 --generate --chapter-thumbs-only --force

Unfortunately even the last command immediately exits with “Generated new chapter thumbnails for…” since it probably already finds them on the internal database.

May I ask some Plex Guru on how to force the thumbnail regeneration?

Thank you

Disable them in the properties of your video libraries.
Then click on ‘Delete Preview Thumbnails’
Save Changes

Optimize Database
Re-enable them in the properties of your libraries

Verify that you have “Generate video preview thumbnails” not set to ‘Never’ under
Settings - Server - Library

Leave the rest to the nightly server maintenance.

Thank you very much, I will try this ASAP on a “small” library and if tonight during maintenance all is fixed I will extend it to other libraries.

I’ll let you know!

You can also Plex Dance the files, which will trigger then getting regerated.

Unfortunately this is not an option in my case, since my library is HUGE (~70 TB) and have LOTS of custom metadata, covers and media review done manually during the years…

Sorry for the late response,
but good news! Your solution worked like a charm!

I needed a bit of time just to be sure, since the rebuild of my library is taking days since my library is huge.

Thank you very much for your help!
